Mr.' Brentson is a booster for the dairy type of cat tle, and he proposes to buy about twenty head of cows of the Holstein breed in the near future, so he in forms us. Winter weather has been so steady the last two months that we are be ginning tQ hope that it will warm up early in the spring and stay warm. Clarence Simonson spent a few days last week visiting his parents. I read a short time ago in the daily papers a quotation from a speech de livered a professor in the State University in which he said that the time was coming soon, in which the farmers would have to farm less land than they have heretofore been doing. I did not understand by anything in that quotation why he believed that, but present conditions in this part of the state tells me that there is a crisis approaching in the farming business in other parts of the country, the same as here, and sooner or later we will meet it face to face. It all depends on whether we, as a class, will be pre pared to meet it then, and if we are there will be no crisis for such of us that are ready, but I dare not think of the consequences to those who are not prepared when it comes. I am now referring to the lack of plant food in the soil, which is shown by spots in the field where the crops were poorer than in other places, and not only that, but those same spots have been getting bigger every year, and new ones have appeared. Now, I don’t wish to alarm anyone needlessly, but the present con dition of our soil shows that we are approaching a time when the con dition of the farmers will be appalling, unless they take time to adjust their business so that instead of being soil robbers, they will be soil builders. There is time yet to make the change, but as it will take considerable time to uu u, uic suunci uicj' uc^m uic ucuci . They should dispose of all their hold ings which they cannot handle, and do full justice to and through using a better class of hogs, a fewer head of cows of the dairy type, and a liberal use of green manure, supplemented in part by barn yard manure, they could make a better living, do it easier, and at the same time their farms would be getting richer instead of poorer as is now the case, if they were farming on an eighty acre tract instead of their present size farms. My diagram in last week’s Glean ings shows the plan that the tennant farmer with limited capital might follow, if he had to buy his farm and equipment to start in with except he would probably have more wild hay meadow than alfalfa to start with, but would increase his alfalfa and his number of dairy cows as his circum stances permitted. He who owns an eighty after selling the rest of his farm would put all cultivated land into alfalfa at once. Constipation. When costive or troubled with con stipation take Chamberlain’s Tablets.
