Phone 32 # ~ A MAIN LINE THRO’ CENTRAL WYOMING On October 18th the Burlington will inaugurate through passenger train service between Denver and Billings over the new main line through the Big Horn Basin.—through Cheyenne, Orin Junction, Casper and Thermopolis. The establishment of through train service over this new main line of railroad is histroic. It closes one of the last great breaks in the transportation system of the country, and offers for the first tiime to the social, commercial and agri cultural activities of Wyoming and of the Middle West, direct means for intercourse and the exchange of commodities between Northern and Southern Wyoming—between the rich farming, live stock, coal and oil regions of the Big Horn Basin, in the North, and Cheyenne, the State Capitol, and Denver, the Metropolis of the Rockies, on the South. The opening of this new line should prove a great stimulus to every farmer, stockraiser, and business man in Centrial and Northern Wyoming. NORTHBOUND, the new train will leave Denver at 4:00 P. M., and ar rive Billings, 6:20 the next afternoon; SOUTHBOUND, leaves Billings 7:30 A. M. and arrive Denver, 12:05 the next noon. It will carry a cafe-parlor car in each direction for the daylight trip between Billings and Casper, and stand ard sleepers for the night trip between Casper and Denver. Let me send you booklets descriptive of this new country,or answer your specific inquiries about opportunities for the farmer and business man. L. W. Lest the students at the Nebraska University Farm forget that they are really on the farm while studying, a large glass container has been placed in the dairy building where the thirsty lad may refresh himself without cost between classes with buttermilk. To insure sanitation, fiber drinking cups have been placed next to the fountain. Simple Silo Hoist. When the silage in a pit or semi-pit silo is used down far enough to need hoisting, it is a problem with many farmers to find a conveniient hoist. A simple, inexpensive, automatic dumping hand hoist may easily be made, according to the Information in the bulletin on “Handling Silage” of the Nebraska Experiment Station. The device is so made that after the operator is in the silo he may fill the dump, raise it to the top, unload it down a chute, and into a cart or wagon or on the ground without climbing out of the silo. This same bulletin also tells of many other devices for hoist ing silage. Select Gilts Now. . Now is the time to select gilts in- ' tended for brood sows. The gilts should be separated from the rest of the heard and not be allowed to fatten. The future usefulness of a sow to a large extent depends upon the way she is handled as a gilt. Give a ration that will promote growth rather than ( produce fat. Such a ration can be made up by using nine parts of corn m and one part of tankage. Keep a good supply of choice alfalfa hay in racks where the gilts can have free access to it. Do not feed too much of the grain ration. Grain equalling about 2 per cent of the weight should prove staisfactory. j Select those gilts showing a good length and breadth of body, a strong back, deep smooth sides, well-develop ed hams, good feet, and a straight set of legs. It is well to select those gilts, advises the Nebraska College of Agriculture, coming from large litters inasmuch as the ability to produce large litters of pigs seems to depend largely upon the blood lines of the ndividual. _x __ Farm Loft...
