During the past three weeks the iresence of the Hessian fly in the rheat has been the cause of much in erest among the farmers of south astern Nebraska, and in some locali ies much anxiety has been felt as to he outcome of the attack. The of ected area extends from Richardson nd Nemaha counties north to the ’latte River and west to Kearney lounty, but the serious injury is prac ically confined to the extreme south astern counties. When the injury rst began to become quite obvious, ie vast majority of insects had al sady attained the fully grown larval r even the flaxseed (pupparium) ;age, which meant that the absorp on of the sap of the plant had prae ically ceased pnd that the insect ould be no further active drain on ie vitality of the plant. Some of the elds, however, were infected as high s 30 to 50 per cent, and these were ft in a much weakened condition ith a probability of serious loss by filing straws before harvest. Many ich fields were plowed up and planted ' corn. The great majority of the fids, however, are much more lightly tacked, and under favorable weather mditions give good promise of mak g a crop in spite of the fly attack, i order to avoid the Hessian fly this .11, the Nebraska College of Ag :ulture advises that the fields should ' plowed early and deeply and sub quently cultivated to obtain a com ict, well-pulverized seed bed and to ep the volunteer grain eradicated, ie sowing should then be delayed itil about October 10, and fields rich have been in wheat for several * ccessive seasons should be avoided, lerever practicable.
