Holt county was not represented at the recent republican state conven tlon, as the delegates present follow ed the lead of Douglas county and walked out. Judging from the comment heard upon the street corners every day, party lines will be given but little at tention by the average voter at the coming election. Whether a steam roller is a good or bad thing in politics, according to some of our politicians, depends upon the complexion of the driver and the object to be attained. Our democratic brethern now have so much trouble in their own ranks that they aie not so anxious to twit republicans about the tangled condi tion of their party affairs. The splendid rains of the past week has caused the residents of this county to drop the discussion of politics and again brag of the great crops that wll1 be harvested here this fall Bro. Miles claims to be a progressive democrat and a great admirer of W. J. Bryan, yet when the fight was on for control of the Holt county dele gation to the state convention, he found It convenient to be absent. The state platform, adopted by the republican state convention held at Lincoln last Tuesday, is the most pro gressive document ever presented to the people of the state by any political party and Is worthy the careful scru tiny and study of every voter in the state who believes in progressive leg islation. That all Is not harmony among the democrats of this county was evident at the oounty convention last Satur day The extreme progressives were in control, however, and their op ponents were afraid to test issues vklth them on a vote before the con vention. Bryan’s work at Baltimore wasoommended and, although some bitter opponents of his were In the convention, the resolutions were pas sed without a dissenting vote. About half of the state delegation are strong anti-Bryan men. The republican state convention held at Lincoln last Tuesday was one of the most Interesting held in Nebr aska for some time. The contest for control was between the progressive and the standpatters and resulted in a pronounced vlotory for the progres sive republicans. Prior to the con vening of the convention the execu tive committee of the state com mittee were In session hearing contests from several counties in the state. As this committee Is controlled by the standpatters they Intended to use their power to unseat progressives in several counties so as to secure control of the convention for them selves. But this plan fell through as a couple of members of the committee balked on the plan of deltberatedly stealing the convention. The com mittee seated the Taft delegates in the oounties of Boyd, Dawes and Douglas and in the other counties they seated the progressive delegat ions. This gave the progressives con trol of the convention and they se lected Governor Aldrich for temporary chairman, without opposition. Shortly after the temporary chairman had been selected the scrap started, it com. i ng over the applntmen t of the com m 11 teeion credentials. When a motion was made to appoint a committee on cre dentials, Attorney Searle of Omaha, floor leader for the standpatters, moved that the credentials committee be Instructed to seat no man In the convention who would not agree to support the national ticket. The motion was declared out of order by the chairman and after trying to bull doze the chair to entertain the motion and being called to order a half dozen times Searle started to march out and wm followed by the entire Douglas uVr-frii. IB -r I» I I. mi rwiYrtwri county delegation, the entire delega tion from two or three other counties, Holt included, and parts of the delega tions from fifteen or twenty counties. There were probably between 150 and 200 men who were delegates in the crowd that walked out. They were joined by the contesting delegations who were denied seats in the conven tion and marched to the Lincoln hotel where the bolters held a convention and endorsed the national ticket. After the bolters had left the regular convention everything went along harmoniously and the convention completed its labors in a couple of hours. Supervisors Proceedings. (Continued from last week.) Wtieceas it appears by report of the State Engineer, dated July 5, tt>l2, a coay of which report has been furnish ed to the county clerk of Boyd county and to the county clerk of Holt coun ty, that a majority of petitions cir culated for choice of site on the pro position of a state aid bridge showed ttiat the Kuhn Island site has the greater number of signers, and the state Engineer further tinds that the Kuhn Island site would accomodate more people interested in the proposi tion than would a bridge at the Par shall crossing. And whereas, it further appears from the report of the state Engineer that the State Board of Irrigation, Highways and Drainage Is willing to transfer the state aid promised for tha Parshall bridge to a bridge at Kuhn Island. And whereas, it clearly appears that & bridge at the Kuhn Island crossing ——————————— [ could be constructed much more cheaply and at a much greater saving to both counties interested, as well as to the state, than a bridge at the Parshall crossing. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the county board of supervisors of Holt county, Nebraska, is prepared to co-operate with the county board of supervisors of Boyd county and with the state authorities immediately to secure plans and specifications for the proposed bridge at the Kuhn Island and to advertise for bids for the con struction thereof. And be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the county clerk of Boyd county and to the state engineer. F O Hammerberg, Mover. Th D Sievers, Seconder. The foregoing resolution was unani mously carried and passed the 10th day of July, A. D. 1912. S F McNichols, county clerk. Mr. Chairman:—I move that we adopt the plans and specifications obtained from the State Engineer for the 60 foot steel bridge to be errected across Dry Creek on section line be tween section 34 and 35, in twp 28 range 12, in Holt county, and the county clerk is hereby instructed to advestise for bids on said bridge ac cording to plans and specifications now on file in the county clerk’s office. M P Sullivan. Th D Sievers. Motion carried. Therefore, we hereby order the county attorney to notify the land owners abutting on said west side sec tion line to remove said fences, viz: C T Fridrich, Atkinson; Thomas Cal ligan, Ewing; W T Hayes, Atkinson. II W Tomlinson, Th D Sievers. Motion carried. Mr. Chairman:—We your committee appointed to investigate repairs need ed in district No 2, find there are several small bridges in need of re pairs and rebuilding.
