O. Snyder, Chairman. W. 0. Hancock, Secrotary. The rain this morning was worth a million dollars to Holt county. Clarence Harmon, the democratic nominee for railway commlssoner, will rejoice over Mr. Harrington's desert ion of the democratic party. The splendid rain this morning has caused farmers to quit talking poll* ltcs and they are now telling about the bumper crops they will harvest this fall. M. F. Harrington, who was the leader of the Wilson forces In this Btate prior to the primary election, announces that he will support Roose velt for president :and will join the third party. Mr. Harrington says that he will attend the national con vention of the new party In Chicago on August 5th. A call has been issued for the nat ional convention of the new party, which will meet in Ghloago on Aug ust 6, Representatives from forty two states signed the oall for the con vention, Nebraska being the only state that supported Roosevelt in the republican national convention who did not have a representative sign the oall. A movement Is now on foot to have Taft and Roosevelt both withdraw their names as presidential candidat es and Jiave the national convention reconvene and select some candidate that will receive the support |ot all faotlons of the party at the coming election, as the presidential candi date. Several members of congress and senators, whose political future hinges upon the result this fall, are said to be behind the movement and it is said that petitions will be circu lated in every state in the union. They contemplate having them cir culated and signed prior to the date of holding tbe new party convention on August S. Lincoln News: The utterance of J. H. Morebead, democratic candidate for governor, on the results of the Baltimore convention tends to con firm the belief of those who regard that gentlemen not as a man stand log for certain principles but as om who Is principally Interested In trim ming bis sails so as to catch tbe mos breeze in tbe shape of votes. Ai quoted in an interview in the World Herald, Mr. Morehead said: “Thi democratic party was blessed wltl such good material for the presidency —the only question that arose was who should be named. Some were without a great deal of support, some had more support than others, and the long balloting evidently expressed the final judgment and opinion of the convention.” There Is nothing in this at which any faction can take serious offense. Only those who in sist that a man should express some idea when he uses words have any right to offer criticism of this state ment of the politician. The Anvil Chorus. The Atkinson Graphic has joined the Norfolk News and Omaha Bee in knocking Governor Aldrich and Im puting to him remarks that he did not utter in the sense in which they lead their readers to believe. In an address delivered upon the state house grounds on June 30 on good citizen ship the governor said: "When the voter goes to the ballot box to excerclse the right of franchise, he assumes and takes upon himself a tremendous responsibility, for the in dividual voter In America or in the United States Is a government build er, is the architect of laws and the institutions under which he lives. Therefore when he enters the booth to vote and looks down his party col umn and finds in that column there is a yellow dog and in another column of the opposition party there is a man, it is his duty to vote for the man." The Bee the next day said that Gov ernor Aldrich called President Taft a yellow dug and proclaimed that fact to the publle in glaring Jhead lines. The Norfolk News and the Atkinson Graphic followed the lead set by the Omaha sheet. Two days after the publication of the alleged libel the governor published an explanation oi the matter and quoted the extract above as the part of the speech that these papers excepted to. Every man has a right to differ with his fel low man regarding political men and measures but we do not believe that these newspapers will add to their popularity or advance the cause they espouse by attacking Governor Al drich, and they owe him an apology for the light in which they have plac ed him with their readers. Old Settlers' Picnic. The members of the Old Settlers Picnic Association of Holt and Boyd counties will hold their annual meet ing for the purpose of electing officer's, making arrangements to hold the annual picnic for 1912, and for the transaction of any other business that may properly come before the meet ing, at Meek, Holt county, Nebraska, on Saturday, July 13,1912, at 8 o’clock p. m. It is earnestly requested that all members and all those desiring to be come members be present at this meeting. John A. Robertson, President Ed Larson, Secretary. 3-2 Wanted—A Man to help In Keying Will pay #30.00 per month.—M. A. Engelhaupt, Chambers, Nebr. 4-2 The county board were In session a couple of days this week. Bids for a poor farm were opened and read. The board received eight offers from land owners in the county, ly ing in the townships of Grattan Shields and Emmet and the; price ranging from 930 to #55 per acre. The county board Instructed the county clerk to write the clerks of the various townships in the county and ascertain the number of paupers in each town ship and the cost of malutainance so that they would be in shape to act in telligently on the matter when it comes up for final action at the next meeting of the board. The Niobrara river bridge question was again up for discussion. The Boyd county board notified the Holt county board that they weTe ready to enter into a con tract for the erection of a bridge across the Niobrara river at l’arshalls crossing under the state aid bridge law. After considerable discussion the Holt county board passed a reso lution notifying the Boyd county board that they were ready to enter Into a contract to build a bridge across the river at Coon Island. A bridge at the latter place they say can be built much cheaper than the one at the Parshall crossing and they say that the state engineer says the lo cation is a desirable one and that the state stands ready to stand half of the expense for the erection of a bridge at that point, but that the State Irri gation Board refuses to enter into the scrap regarding the two locations 1 From present indications there will be no bridge built across the river un , less the two boards can get togethei , and agree upon a location. Wednes day evening the board adjourned un til August 20, when they will meet ai ! a board of equalization, and will mee1 i the next day In regular session. Supervisors Proceedings.
