Since tbe splendid rainfall of last Saturday night Holt county farmers anil stockmen are wearing a smile that won’t come otT. The office of county judge seems to be the most desirable in the county, judging from the number of candidat es who have filed for that office. Another rain like tbe one that fell last Saturdyy night and Holt County farmers will have to invest in many new corn cribs to hold the greatest corn crop ever harvested In this coun ty. H. B. Burch, a resident of Falrview township has filed for the republican nomination for county clerk. Mr. Burch has taught school In this coun ty for several years and has an extend ed acquaintance throughout the coun ty. He has the ability to make an efficient official. A prominent O’Neill democrat says that the corporate interests of the country Is behind the candidacy of Governor Harmon of Ohio, who seems to have the call upon the democratic paesldential nomination. The afore said p. d. says that he would vote for LaFollette of Wisconsin in preference to any man In the country. There has been no filings for the office of clerk of the district court up to noon today, but it is understood that the present clerk, John A. Har mon, ttas burled his ambition to be distrlot judge and that he will be a candidate for re eleotlon for another four year term to his present posi tion. It is also rumored thatC. E. Hall will file for the same office. Atkinson township contains a bunch of at loyal republicans as can be found In the county. At the convention last Wednesday that township was entitl ed to twenty delegates and there were eighteen of them present when the convention was oalled to order. An off year does not seem to make any difference In tbe political Interest manifested by republicans In our sist er city to the west. -- Henry D. Grady has filed for re nomination to the office of sheriff which position he has so acceptably filled the past two years. Henry’B ad ministration has been so acceptable to the people of the county that the Indications are that the opposition can not find a man In their ranks who will enter the race against him to take the defeat that will be his por tion of the battle of ballots next No " vember, The many friends of J. M. nunter throughout thecounty will be glad to learn that he has filed for the repub llcan nomination fur county treasurer. Mr. Hunter has been a resident of tbe oounty for twenty-eight years and has always taken an active Interest In public affairs. He is recognized as one of tbe staunchest farmers and stock men in thecounty; a man whose woid has always been recognized as good as his bond and a man who will make a J. P. GALLAGHER. careful, conscientious public official and one who will keep the treasurers office upon the high plane to which it has been elevated by the splendid ad ministration of Treasurer Harnish. Supervisors Proceedings. Mr. Chairman: I move that out lot B section 18 town 28, range 9 be stricken from the tax list for the year 1910, the same be ing a double assessment. The valuation plac ed on said lots and the hay barn there on being 81400.00 for the year 1909 and 1910, and the tax levied on said lots being 826.00 for 1909, and 826 00 Tor 1910, which assessment and levy is ex cessive compared with other property adjacent to mine and about equal val ue to wit: Lots 1, 2, and 3, of same block with hay barns thereon assessed at 81000 assessed to Alderman, this barn being larger than mine It being 58x150 ft while my barn is only 68x140 ft. 1 also refer to lots 1 and 2 of block 6, same addition and the hay barn thereon assessed at 8800.00: this prop erty is near mine and is closer to the business part of town, I also refer to lot 3 of block 6 same addition, and the hay barn thereon valued at 8800.00 this property being between my barn and the business part of the town so I submit to your honorable body that my lots and barn were assessed too high in comparison with the assess ment of other simillar properties in the same vicinity and equally favorab ly located, I therefore ask your honor able tody to reduce the valuation cf my lots 7 and 8 aforesaid tnd the barn thereon to 81000.00 for the years 1909 and 1910, and reduce the tax levy ac cordingly.
