Etiquet compels him to weal different garments each day of the year, and as nearly all of them are ornamented with rich and rare gems, no millionaire could hope to purchase them, even if a value could be placed on them. The pope’s little skull caps are of the finest silks, while his em broidered slippers of velvet are gor geous to look at. Still more costly are his gloves, made of white wool, em broidered with fine pearls in the shape of a cross. A special herd of 50 sheep Is kept from which all the papal woolen gar ments are manufactured. The sur plices are of the most valuable and beautiful lace, while one long cape, the “cappa magna,” which is rarely worn, hangs straight from the should ers, and literally gleams from top to bottom with gold and precious stones, The rings, too, which the pope wears, are priceless, containing, as they do, many stones of matchless quality. Olive oil, followed by a brisk after polish, is very good for patent leather ! shoes. I Fine work, that Imposes any strain on the eyes, never should be done by artificial light. j' Salt, placed on the coals when the meat Is broiling, prevents the dripping fat from blazing. | Salt water is the best and simplest solution known for cleaning willow j ware and mattings. |: A green mayonnaise, to be used on a j salad of vegetables, may be made by j adding chopped parsley. | A porcelain tub or sink may be ! thoroughly cleaned with a flannel dip ped in spirits of turpentine. Oat meal should never cook less than an hour, and It Is much better If left to simmer all night. Fresh chocolate stains should be soaked In lukewarm water, after which ; they are easily washed out. | Never stand a broom in a corner; tie a piece of string around the handle, j and hang it up. To remove stains and discolorations i from tinware, try rubbing with a damp cloth dipped in soda. Olives ana English walnuts ground together and moistened with mayon naise make a tasty picnic sandwich. Yellow spots on clothing are often due to acid. Try immersing them in [ a weak solution of ammonia and wa I ter. Wet shoes should bo stuffed with paper, which will absorb the moisture ' and prevent the shoes from getting hard. | A sure cure for thirst when water I Is not handy is derived from holding a | dry pebble or button in the mouth. ' Summer curtains of a cross stripe are preferable to Swiss, as they kepp fresh 1 longer and are easily laundered. | Good black ink, mixed with the I white of an egg, is excellent to restore tlie color of black kid gloves or shoes, j When ironing have a cake of laundry I soap handy. If the iron does not run ■ smoothly, rub It lightly on the soap. | For relieving the pain of a sunburn a paste of talcum and cold cream, 1 jnixed. well together, will be found , ' helpful. J Cold cereals, like the various naKes. are much improved by the addition of fresh fruit, with its natural juices. An application of lemon Juice and salt in a good sun exposure is an old and effective remedy for fruit and many other kinds of stains, j In washing brown stockings, do not use blue water: this is the reason that so many brown stockings look i faded after coming rrom the wash. When the asbestos of a gas log be comes blackened, sprinkle it with salt; then light the gas, and the feathery mineral will soon turn white again. To avoid tearing sash curtains when passing a rod through their hems, put a thimble on the end of the rod, when they will slip through easily, i When beaten eggs are added to a hot mixture, always pour the mixture into the eggs, beating vigorously the while. This will prevent curdling. An egg shampoo is easily made. Beat two eggs until all stringiness disap pears, add the juice of a lemon, and use on the head just as you would soap. For sleeplessness take a hot bath, then drink a cup of hot milk with a pinch of salt in It. If the desired sleep does not come, repeat after two hours. If the tops of young turnips are thor oughly cleaned, they can be used with the diced turnips and be boiled the game as cabbage. They make a very good dish. If a fine tooth comb is tised on the hair, take just a small strand at a time, placing the comb close to the ro <ts and drawing it clear to the end of the strand. For the picnic luncheon, pineapple, cut into slices, sugared and wrapped in oiled paper, will be found to keep well, be easily carried and will be found re i freshing. | Always sift flour, powdered sugar, spices, salt, mustard, baking powder, etc., before measuring, because more of the quantity will be used than 1 called for if it is measured first. 1 When changing sheets and pillow cases put a little dried lavender leaves in the pillow cases. The leaves can ; be used over and over and the fra grance is very lasting. While odds and ends of roast meat may be used for soup, care should be taken never to use any charred pieces, i as the smallest particle wll give an un pleasant flavor. i Broken orris root has more of the odor of violets and is better than the powTdered variety. When placed in bu reau drawers, it imparts a delicate fragrance to the contents. A simple and inexpensive mattress pad is the silence cloth which cornea for dining room tables. Cut the desired j length and bind with white bias bind ing. These launder nicely, j An excellent mixture for cleaning ] steel knives and forks may be made i with emery powder and oil. Gasoline is good to clean soft white leather shoes. Tomatoes eaten once or twice a day will often rouse up a lazy liver. All frozen puddings are improved by being served with whipped cream. Use ammonia and water rather than soap and water for washing marble. Milk Is good to wash white paint; cold tea equally good to wash colored paint. Left-over biscuits are much better cut in two and toasted than if merely warmed over. When cooking mackerel or other salt flsh, see that the skin side is placed up permost. To lengthen the life of a tin wash basin, paint it inside with any good quality of paint. Clean zinc with kerosene, rubbed on with a soft cloth, and follow with boil ing water. Iron rust stains should be rubbed with lemon and salt and held in the stcam of a rapidly boiling kettle. To prevent or remove tan, put enough benzoin in the bathing water to give it a slightly milky appearance, Slight iron scorches on linen will often disappear if the piece is laid for awhile in the bright sunshine. An excellent Way to clean steel knives and forks is to cut a fair-sized potato in half and use with bathbrick. Equal parts of salt and cooking soda with a little water will greatly relieve the pain of insect stings and bites. To get rid of rats, stuff their holes with laundry soap which has been lib erally sprinkled with cayenne pepper. Cucumbers, after soaking in cold water for an hour, should be drained and shaken dry in a clean towel before serving. Alum used in rinsing water will pre vent green goods from fading, while a handful of salt in the water will hold blue fast. Vinegar, applied with a soft cloth, will give a good polish to windows, but the dust should first be wiped off with a dry cloth. When stitching a silk garment it will be found more practical to use thread in the bobbin to avoid having the gar ment pucker. An excellent way to cook string beans, instead of breaking them into short pieces, is to slit them lengthwise with a sharp knife. It gives a better flavor. Cauliflower should always be soaked for a full hour before" It Is boiled, and then should be boiled In water very slightly salty for from 20 to 30 minutes. Excellent butter may be made In a small ice cream freezer, but care should be taken that there Is not a particle of ruet In the can, and It should be polished until It shines. A good way to bleach linen or lace Is to put It Into a bowl of soapy water and set it out In the strong sunlight. If it bo exposed to dirt and dust, place a glass over the bowl. To remove grass stains from child ren’s clothes, rub the spots thoroughly with a little fresh lard a short time before washing. Then wash as usual and the spots should come out. When cold halibut is left from dinner, cut It into pieces large enough for In dividual plates, put them on salad plates with slices of tomato and green pepper and serve with mayonnaise. Washing lamp chimneys by Immers ing them In water often makes them brittle, A safer way to clean them is to hold them for a few minutes over a steaming kettle, and then polish briskly with a soft cloth. If a hardwood floor Is sticky after being, treated with boiled oil and tur pentine, get a pail of strong cider vine gar, wring a cloth out of this and wipe the floor with it. It will cause great improvement. If ham that Is to be boiled for break fast Is allowed to soak over nlglit in milk it will have a delicious sweet flavor. If not too salty the milk need not be thrown away, but may be thick ened and used for gravy. To prevent a steak from being tough, place it in a pan in the refrigerator with about an ounce of olive oil, Into which has been stirred a half table spoonful of vinegar, and turn It over 1 several times at intervals.
