GIRL MURDERED
ON W NG EVE
Suspect Groom, Because of a
Clew Furnished by a
Broken Horseshoe.
Wadsworth. Ont., Oct. 13.—With un
usual energy the police authorities are
endeavoring to unravel the mystery of
the murder of Ora Lee, 21 years old, a
handsome factory girl, whose body,
pierced by two bullets, was found early
yesterday on the road between Wads
worth and the hamlet of Custard Hook.
Guy Rasor, the man whom Miss Lee
was to have married this week. Is de
tained by the sheriff pending devel
opments of the police Investigation. Ra
sor denies all knowledge of the tragedy,
and In support of his denial exhibits a
marriage license procured at Wooster.
The body of the young woman was
found by Chas. Rasor, a cousin of
Guy Rasor, as he passed along the
road In the early hours of the day.
The principal clew that led to the
detention of Guy Rasor Is the fact
that along the road where the murder
was committed are plainly seen the
tracks of a horse with one shoe missing.
An examination of the stables at Rasor
home disclosed the fact that one of
Rasor's horses has a shoe missing.
Rasor refuses any explanation concern
ing this feature of the case. He de
clares he can prove an alibi.
Another police theory is that a rival
for the affections of Miss Lee may have
shot the girl on learning of her ap
proaching marriage to Rasor.
Miss Lee left Wadsworth last night
ostensibly to prepare for her wedding.
When the body was found the hands
were folded over the breast and the
limbs straightened out as If the corpse
had been carefully arranged after
death.
The girl's suitcase was on the ground
beside her. Her handbag was still on
her right wrist, and In her left hand
she clutched a handkerchief. There
was no evidence of a struggle. Rasor
apparently Is bowed with grief.
BIG RAIL MERGER
IS UNDER WAY
New York, Oct. 13.—A new railroad
alliance of gigantic proportions Is
forming and may lead to the merging
of the Harriman and Ahe "Rock Island
party" Interests, heretofore fierce ri
vals for prestige west and south of
Chicago,
The Rock Island company, which
controls railroad mileage second only
to that, of Harrlman’s Union Pacific
system, and which has been the most
formidable competitor of the Harri
man lines In the middle west and
southwest, has made arrangements
with Kuhn, Loeb & Co., who back all
of Mr. Harrlman's enterprises, where
by that house will act as fiscal agents
for the Rock Island and Its subsidiary
companies.
The transaction means that warfare
between the rival systems is to cease.
There Is to be no costly competition in
the way of Invasions Into each other's
territory. The companies’ two systems
will co-operate on traffic agreements
that are expected to be mutually ad
vantageous.

CORSETS WIN OUT IN
SUIT OF SALES GIRL
New Yrk, Oct. 12.—Attorney Chauncey
H. Beasley raised the always Interesting
question ot the effect of coreeta on the
charming being who wears them. Mr.
Beasley seemed to have gained the idea
somewhere that corsets weaken a young
woman s vitality and decrease her ability
to work.
Miss Katherine McKenna, of No. 20C
Runyon st., Newark, sued the North Jer
sey Railway company for $25,000 damages
for injuries she sustained In a trolley col
lision at Clinton avenue and Spruce street,
about two years ago. Miss McKenna tes
tified that her hurts hod compelled her to
give up her occupation as saleswoman and
even now prevent her from sleeping well.
She described other lamentable results to
her health.
Mr. Beasley, counsel for the company,
called Dr. John B. Gale, yesterday, and
started out to put a long hypothetical
question to him.
"If a young saleswoman squeeses her
"She doesn't have to," murmured a
youthful lawyer, associated In the case.
Mr. Beasley's question. In brief, was:
"If a young saleswoman, who haa to
' stand for hours at a time behind a coun
ter, squeeses her waist and Internal or
gans with tightly laced corsets will aha
. not be Incapacitated for such work?"
“Generally speaking, yes," said Dr.
I Gale, but he would not say that her cor
sets had caused the ills of which Mlsa
McKenna complained.
To go further Into the subject, Mr. Beas
ley called Dr. John D. McGill, of Jersey
City. The doctor would not say, either,
that Miss McKenna’s corsets had given
her Insomnia. But, apparently, he thought
that the Venus de MUo, who never wore
stays, would make a fine saleswoman It
she had arms.
Then Franklin W. Fort called Dr. Wil
liam Qulmby, Dr. Edward Seely and Dr.
Albert B. Nash, and they agreed that
Miss McKenna’s corsets had not Incap
acitated her as a saleswoman; rather, she
had been compelled to lace tighter aftei
the collision that her corsets might braes
her weakened form.
The Jury gave Miss McKenna $3,70(
damages, a distinct triumph for corsets
