When he was governor of Massachusetts he took his entire staff out for a drive and surprised them by having the carriage pull up at an open field and announcing there was to be a baseball game. Two nines were chosen and the game began. Pretty soon somebody came along the road. "What teams are they?" he asked of one of the drivers. "Why, that man pitching Is the governor of Massachu setts,” the driver replied. “The one catching is the lieutenant governor. The first baseman Is a congressman, the second baseman Is the Judge advo cate general.” "Say,” interrupted the passerby, "perhaps you would like to know who I am. I'm Napoleon Bona parte." The production of American gems more than doubled last year, accord ing to the government reports, the to tal value for 1907 being. $471,300, while In the preceding year the total was $208,000. The total production of sapphires in the United States last year was valued at $229, 800. The Tourmaline is second in Importance and Is placed at $84, X20. Among other Important gents pro duced were chrysoprase, to the value of $45,000; callfornite, $26,000; turquoise, $23,840; spodumene gems (kunzlte and hiddenlte), $14,500; varicite, utahllte and am It rice, $7,600; rose quartz, beryl, aquamarine and garnet, each over $6, 000. Dr. Lucy A. Bannister, of Pittsburg, ireeommends the placing of a trained ’nurse in every factory, department ’•tore and work shop where many girls •re employed. She deejures that this Is a field for social welfare work which at present Is hardly touched, but from which wonderful results might be obtained. She names five ways in which it will bo beneficial: It will pay the employer to support it; it keeps the girls* well; it saves them money; it exerts'an Influence for good morals, •nd It reaches the homes jot the work ers more directly than any other method that has been tried. As figured out by London Answers, the annual cost of "running” a battle ship of the Dreadnought class Is $500, 000 a year, of which $200,000 goes to the officers for salaries and wages. Ammunition In time of peace costs $60,000 a year, the expense of neces sary target practice being very heavy. Victualing, fuel, etc., make up the bal ance. In 1899 the production of fermented liquors in the United States upon which taxes were paid was 36,697,634 barrels. Including 116,520 removed for export. In 1899 the United States Internal revenue tax was paid for consumption on 83,819,814 gallons of distilled spirits other than fruit brandy. In the nine years to 1908 the •mount of distilled spirits withdrawn for consumption had Increased to 119, 808,402 gallons. Every single step will take place in full view of the spec tator. The wireless telephone is being •teadily pushed toward commercial practicability by the Inventors. Some plants frill yield 10 times this amount. DELINQUENT TAX LIST. Notice is hereby given that on Novem ber 2, 1908, that being the first Monday in November, there wil Ibe a public auction of all the tracts of land and town lots in Holt county, Nebraska, on which taxes are delinquent for 1907. That at said sale; so much of each tract of land or town lot will be sold as may be necessary to pay the full amount of the delinquent taxes, accruing cost and interest thereon to the date of sale. That, such sale will be con I tlnued from day to day until all of said tracts of land and town lots shall have been offered. At said sale 1 shall also of fer for sale all tax certificates held by Holt county.
