fHE O’NEILL FRONTIER D. H. CRONIN. Publisher. PNEILU NEBRASKA "The Alaskan fur seal herd is being rapidly exterminated by pelagic sealing vessels, mainly Canadians,” said Pro fessor David Starr Jordan. “These Balling vessels follow the seal herd aa U moves along our Pacific coast in ths spring, and enters Bering sea at the end of the Hone season In August, when they are free, under the Ineffectual regulations adopted by the Parts tri bunal. to use the spear—more deadly than the shotgun—In killing, outside of the 60-mile zone, the seals that fre quent these waters In pursuit of food. As these seals are mainly females that have brought forth their young on the Pribilof islands, the killing of the mother seals results In the starvation of the young upon the land, and the ' inevitable rapid extinction of the fur ■eal herd. Unless something is done for the protection of the seal herds, within five years not only the Alaskan but also the Russian sea! herds will be completely exterminated and deprive this country of a valuable source of revenue and the world of a great boon.” A large yellow cat, with nothing In the way of beauty to recommend it, has .become the' pet of the workmen on the Seattle wharf, says the Post-Intel llgencer of that city. For a long time the cat had been a member of the good •hip City of Kingston. When that ves sel arrived at Seattle from Victoria on her last trip, the cat, contrary to Its habits, went ashore, and when the time oame for the ship’s departure for Taco ma the animal could not be coaxed back. Finally one of the crew grabbed the animal and carried It aboard. Just •a the lines were cast off, however, the cat sprang from the Kingston to> the wharf and disappeared In a pile of rags. Now people are asking: "Did the yellow cat know that the Kingston Would meet with a disaster, and do cats, as well as rats, desert a sinking •hip?” “The cause of temperance Is work ing great headway In Norway. We have adopted the local option policy With excellent results," said P. Anen •en, a manufacturer of white paper, from Sklen, Norway. "Whenever the people of a certain district or county Wish to abolish drinking houses an •lection Is held at which all adult males In that territory are supposed to vote. If any are absent their votes are counted for prohibition. Another elec tion cannot be held until after five gears, and It Is very seldom that a •econd vote Is ever taken when a com munity once goes against license. An other thing that has made national so briety Is the regulation, In many places that liquor cannot be bought except by the bottle, and requiring the purchaser to take the bottle to his home before using any of Its contents." Clubs were the weapons of primitive And savage man. Ancient specimens from Mexico are heavy sticks grooved Along the side for the Insertion of blades of obsidian—that is, volcanic glass. The Sioux club is a flat piece of wood, curving and widening away from the grip, and terminating In a spherical head, which In modern times carried a long spike, while the blades Of several butcher knives are common ly Inserted along the margin. The na tional museum of the United States pos ' sesses a great variety of these shocking weapons, designed, as the frontiersmen •ay, to "knock down the white man and then to brain him and cut him Into mincemeat." The Klngsmlll islanders and other Polynesians make dreadful ■lashing weapons by securing rows of ■harks’ teeth along a haft of wood. Fes, where Mulal Hafld Is reported to have been making hay of electric light fittings and everything else that has the taint of Europe, has given Its name to the familiar Turkish equivalent of a bat. At one time all fezzes came from Fes, It being supposed that only there could the exact crimson dye required be obtained. It Is curious that the names Of an agricultural Implement has thus been appropriated by headgear; for fes, or fas, means In Arabic a hoe. The fa vorite story is the Idrees II, the found er of the city, turned the first sod with one, remarking; “Here I plant my fRS." Another version 1b that an older city called Saf once stood there and Idrees ■Imply transposed the letters of the name. People living in the suburbs of Bos ton are cpmplalning of the undue fa miliarly which Is being shown by deer In nosing about farms, and even In back. In one of the Newtons, recently, the proprietor of a flower garden felt Aggrieved over the havoc done to his best geraniums and rose bushes by c fine specimen of buck. Only the othet day a well setup elk meandered Into Central square, Cambridge. He suc ceeded In dodging trolley cars, but bumped against several awed residents And then tcok a lope down Prospect •treet, jumped through a plate glass window of a printing establishment and then jumped out again. He was finally caught and tied In a cellar. -- » -- A remarkable collection of nearly 600 packs of playing cards of all ages and All nations has been presented to the Company of Makers of Playing Cards Of England. The collection Includes English cards illustrating proverbs, heraldry, fortune telling and Items of topical Interest. The Indian ones are the most interesting In the collection. Cut from what Is presumably decrhlde, the forty skin cards UBed by the Sioux Indian for the Mexican game of monte Are weirdly attractive. The pack con tains four suits—butterflies, fish, sticks and annular ornaments. For the game of gunjfa the Hindoo made use of 12(1 circular cards, hand painted and lac quered. An Interesting feature of the distri bution of prizes at St. Oiave's Gram mar school, Bermondsey, was the pay ment of the "rent” of a freehold field, which was leased In 1666 to trustee! for the benefit of the poor of the par ish. The lease was "for a term o) #00 years, at the yearly rent of a red rose, payable at midsummer If lawful ly demanded.” The representatives ol the trustees paid the rent with a bo quet of red roses, which was handed to the warden of the school. The area of Maryland' is 12,210 square • miles, 2,350 square miles of which ar« water. There are seven states In the Union, which have a smaller area, viz., every New England state except Maine, and New Jersey and Delaware. The gross area of none of these states equals the land area of Maryland. At the end of 1907 the sight deposits of five Paris credit banks amounted to „ 1.424,000,000 francs, and those of the : Bank of France to 489,000.000 francs. Such deposits are made exclusively In f specie or bank notes, or in checks or , drafts to be cashed by the banks. A co-operative purchasing agency la 1 -being organized In this country for supplying American and English mis sionaries with certain necessary sup plies. _ British India has 86,912 miles of tele graph and cable wires, which are worked at a very good profit.
