A Great System.
From Nos L.oislrs.
Master—What is the date of the battli
of Waterloo?
Pupil—I don’t know’, sir.
Master—It is a simple matter, if yoi
haven’t a good memory, to employ witm
mechanical method to aid you. In thi
case, for instance, take the twelv
apostles, add the half to their number
which makes eighteen. Multiply them t»:
ICO; that makes 1800; now, take the twelve
apostles again and add a quarter to their
number, which makes fifteen. Add it all
up together, which makes 1815, the date
you want. Quite simple, you see, and you
can always remember dates by using that
i | system.

The Whistler Butterfly.
Whistler’s earlier Thames etchings had
no butterfly signatures; the first appeared
in 1859, relates Otto Bacher, the New York
artist who lived, and worked much with
Whistler in Venice, In his “Stories of
Whistler” In the May Century. He goes
on to relate that an early signature of this
description is to be found on “The Fur
Jacket.” In “The Harmony in Flesh-Color
and Green” are two butterflies hovering
over his own; in “Battersea” one is paint
ed white against a dark background.
“Later signatures,” Mr. Bacher says,
“resembled the butterfly as we know it
now, but in no case have I found it with a
sting attached until the year 1880, when
Whistler lived In the Casa Jankovitz. One
day he found a scorpion, and impaled it
upon his etching-needle. The vicious in
sect would strike in all directions, now
and then hitting the handle of the needle
with his curved spur.
“ ‘Look at the beggar now!’ exclaimed
Whistler, excitedly. ‘See him strike! Isn’t
he fine? Look at him! Look at him now!
See how hard he hits! That’s rlght
that’s the way! Hit hard! And do you
see the poison that comes out when he
strikes? Isn't he superb?’
“The insect seemed to captivate hinl
completely, and I believe that the addi
tion of the sting to his butterfly datea
from this occurrence. In his writings,
whenever he wished to emphasize a point,
‘ he sketched his butterfly with the sting
! directed towfard the particular remark.”

MOTHERS GARDEN.
From Mother * Mngazina.
A writer In What to Eat makes a
plea "for the return to the old-fash
ioned garden thut mother supervised
and the children kept. There Is dis
cipline, education, love, duty and re
ligion in such a garden for mother and
child. I care tittle how small the patch
of ground may be, plant It to something
and tench the child how to care for the
growths. We worry much about pure
foods. They r.re at the doors of all
who can have a garden, If only they
knew it. Till the soil to make it pro
duce food. Invite the children to study
books that teach the care of the soli
and how to raise food. Show them that
gardening when understood Is not
drudgery, but a healthful delightful
work. It Is easy to lead the minds of
most children along this way. for they
love the fresh air, the turning of the
soil and the care of growths. Step by
step take the children Into the writ
ings of John Muir, of John Burroughs,
of Luther Burbank—waitings which the
children can understand. They will see
gardening and plan cultivation In a
new light. There Is something more
than this also. The effort may lead the
child through Its natural tastes Into a
permanent and profitable life occupa
tion. We complain much, I fear, at not
knowing what to do with the children
when they fill the house with noise.
The panacea to my inlnd is In the gar
den, and I would take them to that
garden through the delightful books
and pictures on the subject that now
till every public library of note. Gar
dening is one of the first sciences man
mastered. It is yet the backbone of
prosperous Germany, Holland and
France. It was the most profitable
pleasure of early New England days.
With our many unused acres In the
west let us return to it, for the love
of the child whom we wish to come Into
masterful life clean of hand and pur<
of inlnd.”

The Prospects for a Large Acreage
to Be Sown in Wheat.
St. Paul, April 24, 1907.—Word lias
been received at the office of the Cana
dian Government in St. Paul that seed
ing has commenced at various points
throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan
and Alberta.
The heavy snowfall during the past
winter has left the ground In splendid
Bhapo for successful seeding operations.
The fine weather of the past few days
has taken much of the frost out of the
ground, and during next week there
will scarcely be a district In which the
seeder is not being operated, l tie most
optimistic conditions exist, and in all
districts tbe farmers are busy getting !
things in shape. There will be a very
large acreage sown in spring wheat,
oats and barley. At many points
throughout the three provinces the
newcomers are busy unloading their
Btock and effects, working night and
day In order to get on their farms and
become active agencies In the effort to
iuake the year 1007 the banner year in
grain-producing in Western Canada.
As compared with districts many hun
dred miles further south than this, it
will be seen that Western Canada
ranks amongst the first In the line of
seeding operations for the present year.
It is safe to say that farmers, who get
n their crop before the 20th or 24th of
May, will receive magnificent returns.
A number of those coming In tills
prlng, who had not their land pre
>ared last fall, will break up enough
and to get In a crop of oats and barley
md probably some flax. This, together
vith the vegetables they will plant,
will give them ample food for them
selves and stock during the coming
milliner and winter. These early seed- j
ng operations are not confined to one
listrlet. but are spread over a country
MX) miles long by 400 miles in width.
The agents of the Canadian Govern
nent, loeated at different points

living information regarding the many
lew districts that are being made avail
