EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE
WRECK SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco, April 19, 7:30 a. m.—
Fire still raging; city partially de
stroyed. Too early morning to learn
definite at water front the exact sit
uation. Boats and surbnrban running
schedule time except Alemeda.
Militia doing police duty, but city
not under martial law.
What seems to be a disaster that
has practically wiped out the metro
polis of the Pacific coast befell San
Fransisco on the morning of April 18.
At 5:10 that morning a mighty earth
quake wrecked many buildings in the
business center of the city and this
was immediately followed by fire
breaking out and spreading from the
ruins to portions of the city not de
stroyed by the earthquake.
Accurate information as to the
number of lives lost is not available,
various reports coming yesterday that
hundreds or maybe thousands had
been killed. Coming at an early hour
in the morning the business portion of
town, where the earthquake was most
severe, was not crowded with people
and thus much loss of life prevented.
To render the work of destruction
more sure and awful the water supply
plant was wrecked, leaving the fire
departments powerless to combat the
flames. A dispatch from San Jose at
11:45 Wednesday morning said:
“The best and most accurate infor
mation regarding the San Francisco
earthquake indicates that the whole
city is being destroyed by fire.”
A report from Sacramento states
school or by self culture are able to
pass the examination In any four of
the nine subjects required for a state
certificate over and above the county
first grade certificates, be excused
from examination for the renewal of
their first grade county certificate.
Also that all strong teachers hold
ing strong second grade county certi
ficates, who by attending an approved
summer school or by self culture are
able to pass the required examination
in the four first grade subjects over
and above the second grade county
certificates, may have their markings
on their second grade county cartifi
cates, accepted and made state grade
county certificates, provided that such
markings meet the requirements for a
first grade county certificate.
