The shortage of former treasurer, McGreevy, is $779 39, however this
amount will no doubt be collected either from his bandsmen or the
amount realized on security given the city by Mr. McGreevy.
It appears there has never been a statement made of the city’s iinancial
affairs, and for the information of the tax payers a more detailed state
ment in given below:
The original railroad bond issue was 22 bonds for $1000 each. One of
these bonds was paid in full Aug. 1,1901 and one paid in full Aug.l, 1903.
Another bond will be paid about August, 1905.
The judgment in favor of Finance Company, of Iowa, was originally
$3418 58 and was rendered for interest due on water bonds. Since 1901
there was paid on this judgment, $1465 00.
The judgment of Addyston Pipe & Steel Company was rendered for
warrants issued on the water rental fund issued in 1894 for pipe furnish
ed in the extension of water mains. The original amount of this judg
ment was $3129 88. Since 1901 there was paid on this judgment $146o 00.
A statement is given below of the amount of general fund warrants
registered since 1891 together with the amount of warrants redeemed
during the same period except previous to 1890. The amount of war
rants redeemed is not given as the records are not clear and it is im
possible to give the exact figures.
Fiscal year ending May 1, 1891, $3778 82

1893, 4118 03
1894, 3570 48

Since May 1,1900, no portion of the tax levy has been used for current
expenses, the entire amount being applied on the old indebtedness.
Of the $750 of warrants registered in 1902, $500 was given for the pur
chase of the building now used by the Firemen, the city still owning the
building. $250 was given in settlement of a damage suit.
A fact worthy of note is that since May 1, 1900, no salaries have been
paid the officials except the city clerk, the mayor and councilmen agree
ing to serve without compensation, a saving of $200 per year or $1000
for the past five years.
A comparison of the warrants registered shows clearly what has been
done during the past five years in reducing the warrant indebtedness
and it is safe to say that if the city’s affairs are conducted economically
for the next two years there will lie no unpaid warrants.
I would recommend the funding of the water bonds, as no doubt new
bonds bearing 5 per cent can be readily disposed of, whereas the pres
ent bonds bear 7 per cent, and from the present outlook cannot possibly
be paid when due. By funding these bonds means a saving in interest
of $300 a year.

I use Chamberlain’s Stomach and

Wonderful Nerve.
Is displayed by many a man endur
ing pains of accidental Cuts, Wounds,
Bruises, Burns, Scalds, Sore feet or
stiff Joints. But there’s no need for
it. Bucklen’s Arnica Salve will kill
the pain and cure the trouble. It’s
the best Salve on earth for Piles, too.
