Waltei Richard went to O’Neill
Tuesday after a load of lumber for
Lue Wyant, who will build on his
claim soon.
Dr. Hess returned from Sioux City
Tuesday, where he went to attend
Mrs. Vick Porter, who had an opera
tion for appendicitis. She is getting
along nicely and if she continues
gaining, will return home in about

Mrs. Henry G. Schmidt took the
morning passenger for Lincoln Tues
day last, where she goes to till a lucra
tive position in the insane sylum.
Mrs M. D. Brooks accompanied by
her son, First Lieut. R. E. Brooks of
the Phillipine scouts, and her grand
daughter, Birdie Itumsey, made this
office a call on Tuesday morning hav
ing arrived on the passenger Monday
evening, Mrs. Brooks contemplates
accompanying her son to Manila about

Miss Ruth Simpson of Fairfield, Io.,
accompanied her sister Mrs. Dickey
when she came home last Tuesday.
Mrs. James Peterson,mother of Mrs.
Clarence Conger of this place, who
years ago lived in Inman, is here on a
visit.
E. II. Clark lias bought the old
hardware building of the E. & B.
Lumber Co., and is moving same to
his lots south of the blacksmith shop.

A. II. Brobst and family have re
turned from Washington where they
moved last spring with a view to
making that their future home; but
Holt county seems to have an attrac
tion that can not be resisted.
J. W. Wagers and daughter, Olive,
arrived home from a business trip to
Perue, Neb. They report crops not as
good in southern part of state as we
have. Mr. Wagers says that the corn
on the low land is entirely ruined and
the crops on the high lands will not
begin to average up with our crops,
he says the high price of land don’t
seem to "cut any ice,” when it comes
to producing crops and lie thinks the
farmers of this locality are far better
off and better stay with their land.

ATKINSON.
H. A. Allen recently purchased a
fine horse and buggy for family use, it
is no doubt one of the finest in the
city.
Fred Swingley with his bunch of
roosters, backed up by all the young
ladles of the town, escorted our cham
pion base ball team to Savage Thurs
day, where they will play the Creek
Itats for $100 a side.
A. M. Church, formerly editor of
the Graphic, left Wednesday evening
for Springview, where he will take
charge of the editorial chair, in the
Herald office, which was vacated by
Mr. Wilson.
It is with the deepest regret that
we announce the removal of Prof. Ira
Lamb from Atkinson which will be
about the 15thof August. Mr. Lamb
has labored dilligently and faithfully
in these schools for eight years and
during that time has proven himself
to be an efficient and concientious
manager of schools. He has accepted
a prlneipalship at Hooper, this state,
and we cheerfully recommend him as
a man of high ability and integrity.

STUART
Mrs. llettie Greenfield has purchas
ed the MilesGreenfield property in the
east Ipart of town and has located
permanently in Stuart.
Charles E. Purdy of Atkinson was
the guest of Linden Mulford the lat
ter part of last week. Mr. Purdy was
formerly a photographer in Burwell
but was recently burnt out.
Will Hudson and H. Peterson of
Brocksburg were in town this week
looking up houses for the winter.
They expect to bring their families to
Stuart, in order to obtain the advan
tages of a first class school.
Ferdinand Ripp lost a team of
horses Tuesday night. They got out
of the barn and were on the railroad
track when a special came through,
chopping one up in a horrible way and
throwing the other a long distance
from the track.
Mrs. Henry Julius has been very ill
for tiie past week. Her daughter from
Cherokee, Iowa, and Page, this county
were sent for, and for a few days her
life was dispaired of. She is rallying at
present time, and her family and
friends hope for her recovery.—The

Proposed Constitutional Amendment.
The following proposed amendment
to, and convention for the revision of,
the Constitution of the State of Ne
braska, as hereinafter set forth, in
full, is submitted to the electors of
the State of Nebraska, to be voted
upon at the general election to be
held Tuesday, November 8, A. D.
1904:
(Senate File No. 114.)
A Bill for a Joint Resolution recom
mending to the electors of the state
to vote at the next election of mem
bers of the Legislature for or against
a convention to revise, amend and
change the Constitution of the State
of Nebraska in accordance with Sec
tion 2, Article 15, of the Constitution
of the State of Nebraska.
Be it Resolved by the Legislature of
the State of Nebraska:
1. That It is deemed necessary to
call a convention to revise, amend and
change the Constitution of the State
of Nebraska.
2. That the electors are recommend
ed to vote at the next election of
members of the Legislature for or
against a convention to revise, amend
and change the Constitution of the
State of Nebraska.
3. That at such next election of mem
bers of the Legislature on the ballot of
each elector voting at such election,
shall be printed or written in such
manner that the elector can indicate
his preference under the law the
words: “FOR calling a convention
to revise, amend and change the Con
stitution of the State of Nebraska,”
and “AGAINST calling a convention
to revise, amend and change the Con
stitution of the State of Nebraska”;
and if a majority voting, at said elec
tion shall vote for a convention, the
Legislature shall, at its next session,
provide by law for calling the same.
I, Geo W. Marsh, Secretary of State
of the State of Nebraska, do hereby
certify .that the foregoing proposed
amendment to the Constitution of
the State of Nebraska, and providing
for a Convention for the revision of
said Constitution of the State of Ne
braska, is a true and correct copy of
the original enrolled bill passed by the
Twenty-eight session of the Legisla
ture of the State of Nebraska, as it
appears from said original bill, on file
in my office, and that said proposed
amendment and revision of the Con
stitution of the State of Nebraska is
submitted to the qualified voters of
tlie State of Nebraska, for their adop
tion or rejection, at the general elec
tion to be held on Tuesday, the 8th
day of November, A. D. 1904.

set my hand and atlixed the Great
Seal of the State of Nebraska.
