Piano tuners have their trials along with the rest of humanity, and the experience of a Philadelphia tuner, the other day, goes to prove it. He was sent into a suburb to tune a piano, which he found practically as good as new. He put the Instrument In proper shape, and felt well satisfied with his work until a day or two later he received a note from the owner, saying the piano had not been properly turned. Thereupon he made another journey, tested every note, and found no fault. He told the lady so. "Yes,” she said, “it does seem all right when you play on it, doesn’t it? But as soon as 1 begin to sing it gets all out of tune again.” Stone Sllngers of the Nile. When the wheat is growing in the fields near the banks of the Nile, Egypt, great quantities of birds of every kind pounce down upon the tender grain and would soon destroy the whole crop were it not for the watchful “stone sllngers.” These are men who stand all day perched on lit tle platforms here and there through out the fields with slings and peb bles, shooting any bird that comes within reach. The work of a stone slinger is a regular profession in Egypt, though a poorly paid one, it being thought that simply standing all day is not very hard labor. It is only for a -few weeks twice a year that the stone slinger can find em ployment. Says Women Should Study Alone. Prof. Ludwig Stleda, probably the most famous anatomist in Germany, recently published a powerful protest against the movement among the pro fessors of medical faculties in Ger man universities for permitting wom en to attend medical lectures in the same classroom with men. He ex presses the opinion that the presence of women must have an injurious ef fect both on the professors and on the women themaelves. Prof. Stleda will not exclude women from medical ' study, but it is absolutely necessary, he says that they be instructed in anatomy in separate classrooms. French Soldiers of Fortune. Gen. O’Connor, who seems to be bent on carving out for France a new colony in Morocco, made his military debut in the corps of guides, which distinguished itself in the battles be fore Metz in the Franco-Prusslan war. During the second siege of Paris, brought about by the commune, he was aide-de-camp to Gen. De Galliffet, who was the first minister of war under the recent Waldeck-Rousseau administration. He has also cam paigned in Tunis and commanded the cavalry in Tonquin. Conan Doyle’s Summer Plans. Among the notable cottagers at Montauk Point, L. L, this summer will be Sir A.
