NAS A NOVEL ADVERTISING IDEA
Vlilludelphlu Tullor Sentli I.nuiUul 1. U

A Philadelphia tailor has evolved a
novel Idea in advertising. He sends
through the mails, unsealed, white
boxes of pasteboard, and each hox
proves, on being opened, to contain
srnne six or seven peanuts. The re
cipient of this cannot help but won
der. There is nothing but his own ad
dress on the plain little box and with
in there is no card nor anything else
to show him whence the odd packet
came.
“What fool joker,” he mutters, “has
been sending me peanuts?” and he
opens one to find, neatly folded in the
empty shall, a little poster reading,
“It's no joke. We make the best fit
ting clothes in Philadelphia. New
spring styles now ready.” Then fol
lows the tailor's name.
The nuts, as an examination proves,
have been neatly split, their contents
removed, the advertisements inserted,
and then the shells glued together
again so skillfully as to defy the
joint's detection. It is a novel idea,
says the Philadelphia Record, iu ad
vertising and it is making a good deal
of talk.
War of Extermination on ftatfl*
The discovery of the part played by
the ship rat in the carrying of plague
from port to port has resulted In a war
of extermination on the part of all
progressive port sanitary authorities.
In the port of London the rats have
been destroyed literally by tens of
thousands. A recently issued report
states that between Nov. 24 and Dec.
31 six cases of plague and thirteen
cases of enteric fever were dealt with
and during that period 10,164 rats were
destroyed. The medical officer of
health in a further report for January
says that 2.203 ships were inspected
and 7,626 rats destroyed. The total
number of rats accounted for since
the comencement of the raid has
amounted to considerably over 100,
000. In one large steamer which was
disinfected on account of smallpox no
fewer than 1,000 dead rats were found
after the process of fumigation.

ceptions is simply amazing.
Bishop Walden is right in objecting
to the indiscriminate reading of no
tices from the pulpit. In the news
papers is the place to advertise.
Some of the effete monarchies of
Europe will feel better when they
learn that J. Pierpont Morgan is re
turning home without merging them.
A Swedish prince is to resign all
claim on the throne of his country to
marry an American girl. It is a fair
presumption that she is worth the sac

Switzerland enjoys the unenviable
distinction of having a larger per

Very likely China would be glad to
borrpw the armies of the powers and
a few generals to put down its rebel
lion if foreign soldiers were not so ex
pensive.
The 16-year-old boy in Delaware
who has attended school since 1892
without being either absent or tardy
once, must be a disagreeably conceited
lad to know.
The Michigan man who ate mince
pie, went to sleep and had a vision
that enabled him to strike oil ought
to let the public know what dream
book he used.
Since the mica mask has been in
troduced for automobile use the rosy
cheeked girl who scorches along city
boulevards has a chance to look as
■cheerful as a parlor stove.
It is regarded as a bad sign of the
times that the women's waists ex

are smaller than the waists of the
Avomen who stop to admire them.
A Brazilian heiress is entertaining
Paris by riding through the streets of
that city behind a team of bullocks
hitched tandem. She is probably pre
paring for a career upon the stage.
By the completion of the reservoir
system the upper Nile district will
be assured of irrigation in both sum
mer and winter. The cost is to be
defrayed by an increase in the land
tax.
The story from Waukesha that a
ghost ceased its capers' in a house
as soon as it was remodeled is impor
tant to landlords. Perhaps prompt re
pairs would keep ghosts out of nearly
^11 houses.
The Municipal Art society of New
York has determined to abolish the
sandwich man, but it allows the
youth with the striped spring suit and
the vociferous shirt to go unmolested.
Such discrimination is unfair.
Doubtless there is sufficient sense
of humor in London to appreciate the
spectacle of Col. Arthur Lynch, the
valiant pro-Boer warrior and Irish
Nationalist, evicting his poor tenants
for falling behind in their rents.
Joe Jefferson ran three-quarters of
a mile the other day to escape from a
crowd of women who wanted to kiss
him. Eye witnesses say the grand old
man put up a sprint that would have
been wonderful even for a profession

President Roosevelt has never been
suspected of being overcareful where
his personal safety was concerned, but
if Santos-Dumont has secured a prom
ise that the chief executive will take
a ride in the Brazilian’s airship it
would indicate that the president Is
growing slightly reckless.

PROSPECTUS OF THE
ill f
-——FOR 1902
Founded in 1873, the New York Family Story Paper enters its twenty
ninth year with a consciousness that its past record as the family paper
of the whole country is the best guarantee of its future performance.
It contains something of interest to the whole household, from its old
est to its youngest members; and while its stories are of more absorbing ^
interest and thrilling incidents than the average tale published in the
monthly magazines, yet its columns are kept scrupulously free of anything
that might offend the most fastidious.
In typographical appearance and Illustration the New York Family
Story Paper is the model for all similar weekly papers. Get a copy and
compare it yourself with the others. Its staff of authors is the best in the.
character of fiction that the mass of people desire to read. Among its
contributors, most of whom write exclusively for its columns, will be
found such popular authors as—
Miss Laura Jean Libbey Mrs. Charlotte May Kingsley
Miss Emma Garrison Jones Mrs. Lillian II. Drayton
Mrs. Alex McVeigh Miller Mrs. E. Burke Collios
Miss Helene Hicks Mrs. Charlotte M. Stanley
