Monkeys
“All well—all happy—lots
of fun”. That is the regular
report from the monkey cage
of Barnum’s Circus ever since
the keepers began dosing the
monkeys with. Scott’s Emul
sion. Consumption was carry
ing off two thirds of them
every year and the circus had
to buy new ones.
One day a keeper accident
ally broke a bottle of Scott’s
Emulsion near the monkey
cage and the monkeys eagerly
lapped it up from the floor.
This suggested the idea that it
might do them good. Since
then the monkeys have received
regular doses and the keepers
report very few deaths from
consumption. Of course it’s
cheaper to buy Scott’s Emul
sion than new monkeys—and
that suits the circus men.
Consumption in monkeys
and in man is the same disease.
If you have it or are threaten
ed with it can you
take the hint?
This picture represents
the Trade Mark of Scott’s
Emulsion and is on the
wrapper of every bottle.

The street railways of Berlin have
recently been fitting their lines with
electricity, following years In the wake
of those of the United States. The
directors of the Reichsanstait, the im
perial physical and technical institute
of Germany, feared that the proximity
of trolley wires with the magnetic
field which would be set up at the pas
sage of every car might interfere with
their experiments and they made rep
resentations to that effect to the gov
ernment. In Germany science is
esteemed only second to royalty and
the government being all-powerful the
street railroads were ordered not to
place any trolley wires within a kilo
meter (five-eighths of a mile) of the
Reichsanstait. As a result, and odd
ly enough it is to an American, the
trolley lines of Charlottenburg, when
the approach of the imperial mauso
leum, the emperor’s memorial church
and the Reichsanstait—royalty and
science—are run underground and the
cars are compelled to cover the inter
vals by means of power drawn from
storage batteries. Asphalt pavements
have also replaced the old cobble
stones in the streets around the
Reichsanstait to prevent the jar of
trucks from influencing the' delicate
instrum .’.'s in the buildings.

A story is told of a conscientious
ministerial golfer who had been of
fered another pastorate, much better
than the one he held and with an ideal
golf course attached. The family were
all enthusiastic players. Happening to
rail one day at the minister’s dwell
ing a friend of the family and a goiter
himself met the daughter in the hall
And asked her: “Is your father going

replied, demurely, “papa is praying
for guidance in the library and mama
is up stairs packing.”

Tli© Dollar Mark.
The name dollar is a variation of the
German word thaler, and the Danish
word daler. The name arose about the
year 1600 in Germany. The Counts of
iSchlick were then coining ounce pieces
from silver obtained in their mines at
Joebimsthal (Jochim's Dale), in Bo
hemia, which gained such high repute
as to become standard coins; whence
the name Joachims-thaler, which final
ly, for shortness, took the form of
thaler—literally a “valley piece.” The
derivation of the dollar mark ($) has
been variously ascribed to (1) a combi
nation of the initials U. S., meaning
the United : tates; (2) a modification
of the figure 8, a piece of eight being
formerly indicated by the character
8-8; (3) a form of HS, which marked
the Roman unit; (4) the contraction
of P and S employed in Spanish ac
counts to indicate peso; (5) a device
formerly seen on the reverse or the
Spanish dollar, and again since 1848,
on the peso duro, representing the Pil
lars of Hercules, and round each a
scroll displaying the inscription “Plus
ultra.”
Increase of Population.
The increase of population in Europe
and North America during the last
! century has been enormous. Franco
has grown from 25,000,000 to 40,000,000,
Germany from 20,000,000 to 55,000,000,
Russia (partly from annexation) from
40.000. 000 to 135,000,000, the English
speaking population of the British Em
pire from 15,000,000 to 55,000,000, and
the United States from rather over
15.000. 000 to Dearly 80,000,000. Alto
gether the growth is, in round num
bers, from 170.000,000 to 510,000,000, or
the space which, at the beginning of
the century, was occupied by one per
son must now accommodate three.
