Barnum's
Monkeys
“All well—all happy—lots
of fun”. That is the regular
report from the monkey cage
of Barnum’s Circus ever since
the keepers began dosing the
monkeys with Scott’s Emul
sion. Consumption was carry
ing off two thirds of them
every year and the circus had
to buy new ones.
One day a keeper accident
ally broke a bottle of Scott’s
Emulsion near the monkey
cage and the monkeys eagerly
lapped it up from the floor.
This suggested the idea that it
might do them good. Since
then the monkeys have received
regular doses and the keepers
report very few deaths from
consumption. Of course it’s
cheaper to buy Scott’s Emul
sion than new monkeys—and
that suits the circus men.
Consumption in monkeys
and in man is the same disease.
If you have it or are threaten
ed with it can you
take the hint?
This picture represents
the Trade Mark of Scott's
Emulsion and is on the
wrapper of every bottle.
Stnd for free sample.

American Printing: Cheaper.
According to a correspondent, a rep
resentative of a provincial printing
firm called on a London firm which
distributed circulars from which the
printer’s name had been removed. An
estimate was prepared on the basis of
a small turn over profit which, consid
ering that the works were situated in
a rural district forty miles from Lon
don, on a rental which in the city
would not pay the ground rent, was
much below what would be possible
for a London house. Indeed, the rep
resentative was confident of obtaining
an order, but was thoroughly non
plussed when told tho price quoted
was considerably above that now paid.
The firm’s printing was done In the
United States, the orders being given
in such quantities as to insure the low
est freight charges, and after adding
the latter, including delivery to the
door, the cost turned out to be consid
erably below that of the lowest esti
mate yet received from any British
firm.

Winter Reading on the Farm
Long evenings are here again anil
naturally one thinks ot a good family
agricultural weekly, because its regular
visits are welcomed by the whole family.
The Twentieth Cenury Farmer is out
of the rut in which most agricultural
papers travel. This is true particularly
of the splendid illustrations from
photographs taken by their own artists
and special articles by the best known
and most practical men in every branoh
of agriculture, such as N J. Harris,
secretary of the Iowa Seed Corn Breeders
association; H. W. Campbell, the
authority oo soil culture; James Atkin
son of the Iawa experiment station at
Ames, la; Frank Q Carpenter, famous
for his letters of travel; C R. Thomas,
secretary American Hereford Breeders’
association; B. O. Cowan, assistant
secretary American Shorthorn Breeders’
association; Dr. A. T. Peters, Nebraska
experiment station: E F Stephens,
president Nebraska Horticultural
society; Woman's Department, con

Neb.;J. J Edgerton of the Iowa Ex
periment Station will answer all ques
tions relating to live stock matters,
This is a weekly agricultural family
paper, in which the farmei’s wife is
particularly mtereste on account of the
pages devoted to her particular interests.
In fact, there is no paper published
either in the east or west that meets so
well the wants of the western farmers
Hnd stock raisers and their families.
If you do not get it send 10 cents for
a ten weeks' trial subscription to The
Twentieth Century Farmer, 2260
Farnam Btreet, Omaha, Neb., and you
will have an opportunity to become
acquainted with it. A dollar will bring
it for a whole year.
Remarkable Duel with Sabers.
A remarkable duel with sabers was |
fought recently at a quiet spot on the
estate of Count Rodocanachl, near
Leghorn. The combatants were Sig
nor Gino Ferrini of Leghorn, and Lieu
tenant Re Rivera, of the artillery. The
combat began at 1:30 and closed at
3:10 p. in. Fighting thus lasted ex
actly two hours. There were seventy
two “rounds” or assaults, and the
“halts” altogether made a total of
twenty minutes. Although actually
thrusting and slashing at each othei
for an hour and forty minutes, both
combatants escaped with slight cuts.
