Anierioan Schools Abro«4* President Harper of the University of Chicago announces that the univer sity has begun to establish affiliated preparatory schools in different parts of Europe. These schools will be branches of academies which are affil iated with the university in this coun try. The purpose of this plan is to give opportunity to the children of the college age whose parents are trav eling abroad during the year to have the benefits of foreign residence with out obstructing the progress of their studies. Paris will be invaded first, and the American Home School for Girls will he opened at 20 Rue do Longchamps, on October 15. The work of the Paris school will be under the immediate charge of Miss Elizabeth Wallace, heretofore instructor of French in the University of Chicago, and of Miss Emma Baird, for many years principal of a girl’s school in Kansas City. Berlin, according to President Harper's plans, is next in the line of march after Paris. Dinner* a m3 Gowns. NothiWg pleases a woman more than to be asked out to dine at a fashion able hotel, says the Lady’s Pictorial. Whatever she may say to the contrary, woman likes to “dress up,” as the chil dren say. She likes to feel that she looks nice, and she wants other peo ple to see-her; and, finally, she likes to compare herself and her gown with others and their gowns. Where can all these aspirations be better fulfilled than in the gorgeous dining resorts ol the present day? The “Bean" Waa u Dn lo. Two years ago a Philadelphia lover of plants received from a traveling agent at Manila what was called a bean, producing a beautiful tree cov ered with flowers. The precious seed was sent to a florist at a cost of $1 a month for care and culture. As the growth at the end of two years was only ten inch 's, a botanist was ca'led in and pronounced the bean an oiuin ary date seed. jr. Price's Cream Baking Powder Awarded Cold Medal Midwinter Fair.
