CYCLONE KILLS 8
BOYD JO. PEOPLE
NaperNews: A destructive cyclone
passed through a strip of country in the
valiev of the Keya Paha about twenty
five miles north of Stuart last Thursday
evening between 7 and 8 o’clock, with
the result that seven persons are dead
and seven others seriously, and some of
them fatally, injured, besides a large
number of animals dead and injured
and several thousand dollars worth of
propeaty destroyed. The dead are:
Jacob Grening, aged 55.
Maggie Grening, aged 8.
Mary Crening, aged 6.
Two Grening boys 1 and 5 years old.
Clara Anderson, aged 7.
Ida Anderson, aged 5.
The injured are:
Mrs. Grening, severely injured. Re
covery doubtful.
Grace Grening. slightly injured.
Mrs. August Anderson, shoulder badly
shattered; will recover.
Bertha Anderson, severely injured.
Theodore Andersan, seriously crushed
about head and arms, recovery doubtful
Henry Mcrtz, leg broken.
Otto Merlz, seriously injured about
head and body.
When the News reporters visited the
storm-stricken section this morning
they beheld a scene that beggars descrip
tion. The storm appears to have start
ed near Fred Miller’s place where a bug
gy was demolished. It traveled in a
general easterly disection, Imakiug zig
zag movements north and south. In its
course it touched the two places of Ja
cob and John Berg, destroying all the
buildings at the former’s place excepting
the house, and injured three horses.
The place of Merlz brothers was in its
path and there is nothing left of their
buildings, while two colts are missing
and the brothers are among the injured
At Anderson’s the granary was lifted
up bodily and turned over, then set
down m an opposite direction. Daniel
Hildebrand's house was damaged, while
one horse is missing. Jacob Walter has
stock missing. After the elder Ander
son’s place was visited the storm seemed
to follow a gulch down to John Huff’s
place, damaging his house and granary.
From here it struck Jacob Grening’s,
leaving not a yestige of any building,
and killing and injuring those mention
ed above, besides four horses and other
stock. Mr. Grening’s body was found
80 rods away in a meadow, while two of
the childern were fouud nearby in a
pond and the other two in the brush,
these two and their father not being
found until this morning. From this
place the storm parted, one part going
north and demolishing the new claim
shanty of Rev. L. E. Barnes, then pass,
ing east. The other part seems to have
gone across the river, cutting a path
through the tall trees and heavy under
brush, wrecking the new bridge, recross'
ing the river and picking up August
Anderson’s house breaking it into kind
ling wood. The destruction was so
complete and the course of the two
wings of the storm such as to indicaW
that they met again at this place and
after doing their fearful work went up in
the clouds. August Anderson was away
from home and therefore escaped. The
injured members of his family are
mentioned above. After the storm H.
Y. Willson swam the river and went to
the assistance of the injured. Mr. An
derson and his brother, Will, had come
uo-n from the latter's place and to
getuu- they gathered up the injured
and with great difficulty took them to
the father’s house mentioned above,
where Dr. Zimmerman was called and
rendered such aid as was possible. The
mother and oldest daughter have good
chanoes for recovery, while the boy is
dangerously, perhaps fatally injured.
•tPreceeding and following the cyclone,
heavy rains and hail fell all over west
ern Boyd county and extending into
Dakota. Hail stones fell measuring 12
inches in circumference and thousands
were as large as goose eggs. No par
ticular damage is reported from the hail,
however.
Butte, June 21: A small hurricane
struck Lynch at 10 o’clock last night and
threw over several buildingg. No one
whs hurt. Southwest of Lynch three
farm houses were blown to pieces and
two persons were badly injured. Evert
Ricard’s brick house on the Niobrara
was blown down and a child was badly
injured. Farmers along the south side
of the Niobrara were hailed out of their
crops.
Mrs. James Parshall, wife of the
owner of the Badger roller mills,Badger,
Holt county, died at 0 o’clock tonight as
a result of fright from the cyolone last
night.
Rapid City, S. D., June 21: A terrific
hail storm passed over this city today,
doing grea t damage to buildings. Few
houses escaped with whole windows.
Hnilstones seven inches long fell. Six
miles west of the city the storm took the
nature of a tornado, The houses on the
Tittle ranch, occupied by F. N. Allen
and family, were demolished and the
inmates barely escaped death. Trees j
were torn up by the roots and carried |
long distances. The Silver City mail !
carrier and a woman passenger were 1
overtaken and the buggy demolished, j
both people being severely bruised.
Spearflieb, S. D., June 23: Two hun
dred Angor goats were killed in the herd
owned by C, A. Scott on the range
north of this city by the hail. His loss
will amount to something like $3,000.
The hail did a great deal of damage iu
spots on the ranges and in the valleys.
All of the counties in the Northern
Hills, including Crook county, across
the line in Wyoming, will have to stand
heavy damages to bridges and country
roads. There is scarcely a bridge left on
the larger streams, even the steel struc
tures being either washed out entirely or
rendered unsafe.
Attorney M. F. Harrington has been
at Springview this week assisting the
county attorney of Keya Paha county
iu n cattle stealing case that is attract
ing a good deal of attention among
stock men of this section of Nebraska.
Joseph Bingham, a proninment oattle
man of Keya Paha county, is charged
with cattle stealing. For some time
past|cattlcmen have been losing cattle
and the cattlemen's association started
an investigation. Sensational devolp
ments are looked for at the hearing. It
is believed that several other well
known stockmen will be implicated.
Frank Hoover who, it is nlleged, is one
of the gang, Is now in jail and it i9
said is willing to tell all he knows'
Stockmen of Rock, Kaya Paha and
other counties are interesting themselves
in the case, determined to go to the
bottom of It.
