Professor Drake estimates that within the 150 square miles around Tse-chau there are about three thou sand mllion metric tons of coal, and It must be remembered that this area Is only a little of the ragged edge of the great coal fields of Shan-sl. Most of Shan-sl has been found underlaid by large coal beds. Richthofen esti mates that the anthracite coal alone of Shan-sl amounts to 630,000 mil lion tons, and that the coal area Is greater than that of Pennsylvania. Recognizing the danger to property from the presence of a large number of Impecunious and idle Frenchmen, the government of British Guiana has appro ed of a small expenditure from the treasury to enable some of these men to leave the colony. Charles Rollinson Lamb, the archi tect of the Dewey arch in New York city, is a grandson of Charles Rollin son, who was the most prominent steel engraver of his time, and who, when the committee waited upon him to en grave the set of gold buttons for the suit ;n which the first president of the United, States was to take his oath of oflke, did the work and refused com pensation, saying the honor-was suffi cient. , SUNDAY SCHOOLS. * They Originated la Milan. Italy. Under Cardinal Borromeo. Sunday schools originated in Milan, Italy, under the direction of Cardinal Borromeo, In 15S0. By his aid and in fluence numerous schools for the dis semination of theological information of a rudimentary character were es tablished. About the middle of the next century Rev. Joseph Alleine in augurated Sunday schools in London, and between 1760 and 1763 a number of Sunday schools were started in var ious parts of England and Scotland by Rev. David Blair and Rev. Theophilus Lindsey. Robert Raikes of Gloucester lent valuable aid in establishing Sun day schools in the vicinity of his home, where he was the publisher of the Gloucester Journal. In 1781 he paid rent for suitable rooms and halls, and in them Installed poor women as in structors, to whom he paid a shilling a day each for teaching poor children a fundamental knowledge of Chris tianity. His efforts had great influ ence; other philanthropists followed his example, and soon Sunday schools began to spring up in most of the j larger towns of England.
