Gentlemen: On account of a misunderstanding with you as a county board, and in consideration of a request from M. H. MeCartby, chairman of the peoples independent party, and on account of disbarment proceedings begun in the district oourt, that 1 resign the office of county attorney. 1 hereby tender you mv resignation as county attorney of Holt county, Nebr. 2 Said resignation to take effect May 2, A. D. 1900. W. R. Butler, county attorney. Id tendering this, my resignation to this board, I wish to say to the county board, and to the people of Holt county, that I have done my full duty as county attorney, according to the best of my ability. As county attorney I have done no dishonorable act. Political parties for political and private advantage, have secretly and maliciously circulated re ports to the effect that I have been guilty of official misconduct, and that [ am indebted to Holt county. In my judgment the best thing for me to do, lor the populist party, and for myself is to resgn, then as a private citizen, I will t>e entitled to an immediate investiga tion, whioh will mean to me a vindica tion. To my friends and to my bonds men, it will be found that I have not taken a cent of county money that I was not entitled to, and that before this matter is over, it will be found that the ;harges against me have been made by scoundrels who desire to injure the populist party, and who, to accomplish this are willing to blacken the reputa tion of an honorable man for the pur pose of furthering their wicked and malicious schemes.
