Toledo Blade—Washington Nov. 38: 1 The supreme headquarters of the American Protective Association in this ( city have been closed and the office fur- , niture and other appurtenances sold ' under the hammer, a Washington pub- ! lishlng house having foreclosed a mort gage given to secure payment of indebt edness contracted for printing suppllea. 1 The passing of the order as a national organisation is the result, chiefly of dissensions that had their origin in the presidential oampaign of 1899, and are said to have caused a falling off of more than half of its membership. For some time the subordinate coun cils have refused to contribute to the support of the national body, which, finding itself without means to continue its work, has qnletiy quit. John W. Echols, of Atlanta, Ga., the •upreme president, who has been mak ing this city his temporary residence, says that one reason for the suspension is that a large number of the members of the association wanted office under President McKinley, and when they failed to reach, held the national officers responsible. Another reason advanced by Mr, Cy Echols is that “at least one-third of the members arc trying to make a living out of it” Re declares that the organiia tlon owes him 91,000 on account of salary, and says be is ready to resign as soon as he is paid.
