Borne of the populists think they have
one on the npubllcane of Holt county
because they elected a free silver repub
, llcan, chairman of their oounty conven
tion, but they Should' remember that
the Colonel was so much of a republi
can that he went back on his principles
to stay with the party.
Charley Hahn cut himself quite se
verely just below the knee last Monday
evening. He was working for Nick
Wedieae and went out after dark to get
a drink and ran against a mower sickle
that was leaning up against a tree, be
tween the house and well. The wound
bled quite profusely but Dr. Blackburn
soon had it under control.
A number of the business men ot
Atkinson entered In a live bird shoot to
help the gun club get rid of their extra
birds. No one was allowed in this
shoot except men that had never shot
any at tbe trap, and each man shot at 7
birds. Here ie the score: Allison 2,
Howard 8, Allen 0, McDonald 4, Fisher
8, Stewart 8, Hart 4, Bwlngley 1, Chap

The North Nebraaka Amature ahoot

time. It would take too much apaoe to
give the eooraa in full, but the ahootlng
waa of a high daaa both at live birda and

themadvea well pleaaed with the ahoot

i'-V The republican caucua went off

The following were elected delegatee
to the county convention:
J. E. Allison, Louis Reymer, Jacob
Clippfnger, R. H. Jenness, H. A. Allen,
D. G. Murphy, C. E. Havens, B. E.
Sturdevant, A. F. Hart, R. W. Johnson,
C. J. Brooks, Wallis Fullerton.
Everyone in Atkinson, except a few
of the populists, were pleased to learn
that Wm. Dickerson bad received the
republican nomination for sheriff.
There is not a more worthy or popular
man in the county and his election is
almost a certainty. Will was here long
before the railroad and has shot ante
lope on more than one of the townsites
of the towns in Holt county. Will is
here to stay and always has been a re
publican and has never yet received any
thing from the party for the energetic
work he has given it and we are all
proud that be has agreed to take up the
light of the party for sheriff, and bring
victory to the republican ranks in Holt
county once more.
The republican convention could not
have found a beter man than O. M. Col
lins for their nomination for county
clerk. Mr. Collins is a former resident \
of Atkinson and the people here are not
going to forget the many favors that O.
M. has always been so willing to show
them. He can count on Atkinson for
more than her usual republican majority.
POPULIST CONTENTION
(Continued from first page.)
the unanimous choice of the convention
—thoie wanting the office themselves
not voting.
Convention next proceeded to the
nomination of a county judge, and the
following names were brought out on
the Informal ballot:
G. A. McCutohan..*.60
C. Selah.47
M. Slattery.15
D. Hunt...7
M. Costello.1
W. B. Ashton.8
Total.....124
The convention seemed fully satisfied
with the number of names brought out,
and proceeded to a formal vote on them
which resulted as follows:
Selah.76
McGutchan.46
Costello.1
Total.122
Mr. Selah, having received a majority
of ail the votes cast, was, upon motion
declared the unanimous choice of the
convention.
Nominations for county superinten
dent were next In order, and Dr. Norval
made a strong plea that the south coun
try be given a representation in a county
office—just for a change—stating that
they had always supported the candi
dates nominated in other parts of the
county, and they thought it was about
time that the south country be repre
sented, and he "demanded” that they be
given representation ih the person of J.
8. Hoffman for cotmty superintendent.
A motion was then made to suspend the j
rules and elect Hoffman by acclamation, !
but that was not what the "ring” want
ed, and a motion to table the previous
motion prevailed.
An Informal ballot was then taken to
bring out candidates, and as usual it
found a lot of them: The vote stood as
follows:
J. C. Morrow. 61
J. 8. Hoffman.44
G. H. Phelps.7
— Mahoney......1
W.L. Worrel.7
Total ..ISO
J. 0. Morrow, having received a ma
jority of the votee, a mation prevallid
making the informal vote formal, thua
abutting off all further voting.
A motion to auapend the rule and
nominate M. F. Norton aa county' aur
veyor, by acclamation, waa tabled. An
Informal ballot waa then taken to bring
out namea, and reaulted aa followa:
M. F. Norten.07
W.W. Page..98
Total.185
It will be remembered that there were
only 189 votee in the convention, and
when thia vote waa taken at leaat 95 of
thoae had left the room. Aa it waa a
caae of ballot box atuSing, pure and
aimple a motion to auapend the rulea
and nominate Wm. Lell by acclamation
prevailed. B. Kline waa nominated by
acclamation aa coroner.
The following delegatee were then
choaen to attend the etate convention
which will be held In Lincoln on Wed
neaday Sept. 1:
H. B. Hendereon, Hugh O’Neill, M. F.
Barrington, B. B. Howard, J. H. Hop
kina, Peter Kelley, Jamea G. Bel ah,
Juatin McCarthy, Jr., E. Downey, T. V.
Norval, Morgan Hayea, John White, K,
B. Evea, L. A. Jillaon.
M. F. Harrington waa choaen aa chair
man of the delegation.
Of all the conventiona held in O’Neill,
we do not believe there waa one that
gave the dlaaatiafaction that thia one did.
After the convention vu over, you
could aee groups of men strnding on all
the principal streeta of the city,, discuss
ing the nominees, and if you approached
any of them you would be aure to bear
aome one aay, with more force than
politeness, “I’ll be — if I’ll vote for —
or — and the rest would agree with him.
The People have stood a good deal
but the present populist ticket is on*
straw too much, and it will break the
party.
