ATKINSON ITEMS. VERN MCDONALD, Editor. News is very scarce this week. Miss Rothers left for Iowa Wednesday morning. _ Frank Moore went to O’Neill this morning. J. F. Brady left Wednesday for a short trip to Chicago. C. M. Forney came up from Norfolk Sunday and returned Tuesday. John Hanly, of Hammond, was doing business in Atkinson last Tuesday. Monday evening Miss Blanche Shutts gave a party to a number of her friends, all of whom report a good time. Dell Akin and Lew Brown were in from Hammond Tuesday.' They report the crops doing well in that locality. Miss Pearl Burleson returned Friday from Arlington, Neb., where she has closed a very successful term teaching. Thos. Carton was taken to O’Neill Wednesday morning. He has been getting along nicely since the amputa tion of his leg. The North Nebraska amateur shoot ing tournament will be held at Atkinson August 18, 19 and SO. Better get out your gun practice up a little and attend. Mrs. G. J. Brook accompanied by her daughter, Jessie, left Friday for Spenc er, la., where she will spend about a month visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. H. Clark. Miss Florence McDonald returned to Fremont Wednesday morning where she will stay about three weeks to com plete the course of study she is taking at the normal. Mis Nellie Flood, who has been visiting her returned to Chi cago on the same day. The ball game last Saturday between O’Neill and Atkinson could not help being exciting, for there was no telling Just when one nine might run in fifty or sixty seores and so cinch the game. Although a lead of fifty or slxtv would not have made the game sure, still it was felt that if one nine could have got that much ahead in the last half of the game they would yery likely, barring . accident, win out. But this was not to be, for the game continued close, Atkin son never getting more than twelve seores ahead, and so the excitement was j always at the highest pitch. In the . sixth and ninth innings the O’Neill boys made a bluff or two at trying to win but when the Atkinson boys thought that they had allowed them to amuse the ladies in the grand stand long enough they Just put them out and laughed at them. And talk about kick ingl There were only two mules on the ground, but when the O’Neillitee started to kick those mules had to be taken away as their owner said they would surely die of envy, for they had always prided themselves on being the cham pion kiekers of North Nebraska. Whenever an O'Neill player got within six feet of, a base and was called out they considered they had a chance for a kick, and so they kicked, for you can bet they never let a chance go by. Twice they said that they wouldn’t play any more and started for home with their ball and bat, but the crowd felt sorry for them both times and presented the umpire and the captain of the Atkinson nine with a petition asking that they let the kickers have their own way, as It would make no difference with the outcome of the game and the crowd didn’t want them to go home for it was too much fun watching them try ? to play ball. So the umpire, at the request of the Atkinson nine, granted the petition. After that whenever an O’Neillite thought he should not be put out he kicked, and the umpire would say, "all right, hold your base, I must have been mistaken.” We understand that O'Neill claims she can get up a better nine than the one they sent. If they couldn’t we would feel sorry for them, and we hope they will send it up before long so that we can see it. Here is the score by innings of last Saturday's game: O’Neill— 1-0-8-0-2-6-1-0-5—18. Atkinson—3-2-0-6-2-S-8-4-*—25.
