Nick is an office boy employed on
Broadway, New York. He turned up
in the office last winter with an un
gainly looking cur hanging on to a
tattered, rope which he had improvised
from some remnants in the ash bar
rel. The chief clerk shook his head
resolutely at Nick’s proposition that
the canine should become one of the
office staff. Nick said it was too
cold for thoroughbred dogs to be
wandering about without a l^ome. The
d&k said that it was a cur and had
better die anyway, so Nick lead his
aquisition off into the street. He was
looking about as dejected as the cur,
when a lady met him who looked as if
she might have picked up her inform
ation about canines at the dog show.
. She accosted Nick and asked him what
he would take for the dog.
• “Seventy-five cents,” said Nick.
The woman took out a half dollar
and compromised. Then she led the j
dog off in triumph.
When Nick got back to the office the
ohief olerk said to- him: “Nick, you’re
in luck; there’s a #10 reward offered
in the Herald this morning for your
dog.” Nick began to feel giddy. “The
description tallies exactly. Take it
around to 15 Irving place and get your
#10,” added the clerk. Nick slid out of
the -office without making any reply,
and just as he reached the steps of No.
15 he met the woman who had bought
the dog coming down with a new #10
bill in her hand and a smile on her
face which made Nick go off and kick
himself all over.

The man looked at her and then
around the room.
“See here, I don’t want any sass
from you. I’m tired and want to gp
to bed. And if I don’t get a room with
a bed in it right off I’ll make things
fly.”
“Sure. now. vou can take sass from
me and get alnse for yeesself while ye
pull down that bed that’s against the
wall—do it yeesself and learn some*
thing.”
“There’s no bed here and you know
it I’ll go to the office and see if a
man is going to be treated this way.
Get out of my way. ”
And he pushed Nora aside and
started down the hall. Nora stood
with her arms akimbo.
“Did I ever see the loikes o' that?
The man in his own country don’t
know his own bed. Sure, it is long
time before crossing that I knew them
American beds. Come back, come
back, I say, and I’ll show you some
thing, though it’s from the Green Isle
I am.”
But the man would not listen. Ip a
few minutes there was a combination
of Irish brogue, Indiana dialect and
clerk culture. Culture and brogue and
the “American bed” must thave won
the battle, for in a short time every*
thing was quiet on the Potomac.

The fad for collecting spoons for
souvenirs has ramifications little
dreamed of by those who toy curiously
with the quaint little product of the
silversmith’s art, as they sip out of
dainty porcelain the fragrant brew
from my lady’s tea-bpll.
Harvard boys are faddists as well as
their sisters and sweethearts, but they
do not seek'the uttermost ends of the
earth for their treasures. The famous
and hospitable hostelries of the neigh
boring Hub are where they carry on

then they slyly slip a fork or a spoon
into a pocket, and, no matter what
the check may amount to, the spoony
sophomore is happy, for he has added

to mystify his fair friends.
'This accounts for one who at a little
spread took tea from an Adams House
spoon and salad from a fork bearing
the word “Parker’s”
If the student has been industrious,
every individual of a party of a dozen
uses silver from a different hostelry.

Fortunately the two countries are
widely separated or one profession
might be considered responsible for *
the other. Those that are wealthy in
the lugubrious profession—and every
thing is a profession now from plumb
ing to philosophy—are embalmers as
well, and receive generous compensa
tion for their service. One can imagine
how even the ghastly offices to the
dead may take on a tenderness of
ministration when performed by quiet, |
gentle women that would be grateful
to the bei^ft. But what of the women
themselves? Men undertakers are pro
verbially jolly and philosophical, but
women are naturally given over to
melancholy.
Hardness of Copper and Zinc.
An interesting fact concerning the
relative hardness of copper and zinc
has been brought to light by means of
M. Paul Jannetaz’s new soleometer.
Most authors regard zinc as harder
than copper. If, however,the metals are
examined in a sufficiently pure state,
it appears that copper is the harder of
the two, this removes an exception to
the rule, that the harder the body the
less its atomic volume. I
