A man in Pecatonica, II)., will be
buried alive, tome lime next week, in a
grave tlx feet deep. Grain will be
§ / town over him and wltcn tall enough to
out It will be harvested and the man
taken up from bis resting place. Mott
people predict that the man will be very,
yery dead when exhumed. Others
claim that he will come up alive and
k well. We have it from no less an
authority than Sir Edwin Arnold .that
this feat has beon accomplished several
times in India. The person to be buried
■goes into a comatose state, the lungs are
Undated to their utmost capacity and the
tongue turned down so as to completely
/close the opening to the lungs. The
mouth, eyes, ears and nose are sealed
with wax, and a solution is poured over
the body which closes the pores of the
skin. We are inclined to believe that if
the Pecatonica man will make the
attempt he will be successful.—Ex.
The editor of a weekly journal lately
lost two of his subscribers through acci
dentally departing from the beaten track
in his answer to correspondents: Two
of his subscribers wrote to ask him his
remedy for their respective troubles.
No. 1, a happy father of twins, wrote to
inquire the best way to get them safely
oyer their teething, and No. 2 wanted
to know how to protect his orchard
from the myriads of grasshoppers. The
editor framed his answers upon the
orthodox lines, but unfortunately trans
posed the two names with the result
that No. 1, who was blessed with twins,
read in reply to his query, "cover them
carefully with straw and set Are to them
and the little pests after jumping about
in the flames a few minutes will speedily
be settled," while No. 2, plagued with
grasshoppers, was told to "give a little
castor oil, and rub their gums gently
with a bone ring."—Ex.
