Huntington, an able ah torney of Oakdale, called at this office this week. lake all others he pro pounece The Frontier the finest equip ed printing office in the west. —Postmaster Ludwig, of Haynesville postedce, made a business trip to O’Neill last Friday. Mr. Ludwig is a thorough business man, and we trust the scheme he has on foot will be fully developed. —Three of “the boys” oflpred to eisl” a voting lady in her wajjt-from the purtv New Year’s eve. She quickly re plied, “No, sir, I’ll go it alone.” They all “passed" and she “went out.” It was a baU deal. —Clarence Selnh, the wide-awake edi tor of the Norfolk Journal, failed to get pnt a paper holiday week, but be gath ered the necessary matter, locked up tlie forms, went to press, and made an issue, just the aanie. The Frontier extends the usual 'gratulations, and wishes Uro. Sclph a happy matrimonial j career. * 1 —A malicious story is in circulation at Atkinson to the effect that a young lady has gone back on “her feller” be-, cause he is so bow-legged that she can not sit in bis lap. He has the sympa thy of the community. —They hare got it figured down fine at Niobrara, and at their social parlies make the following rates: Ten cents a hqg, any girl between tbe ages of 14 and 20; five cents from 20 to 30; one dollar to bug another man’s wife; old maids two for a nicklg, with a chromo thrown in. The scheme brings in lots of tlie wealth of the boys. —As some parties were getting a load of hay from Hagarty's stacks yesterday tbe gun tielonging to Mr. George Scovey, and stolen from Millard’s barn last week, was found. Who put it there is the conundrum. It wouldn’t be healthy for the thief, if discovered, you can bet. Scovy of course is happy over the recov ery of his property. * - Judge Barnes has fixed June Gilras the time for opening district court in O’Neill. We are sorry indeed, and so is every citizen of the county, that the date was not made for February, as there are several matters of great importance which should be passed upon immedi ately. An effort should be made to have the time changed, if it eau be done. —From the Rockton (III.) Herald we J learn that our charming young lady j friend of auld lang sine, Miss Mary Manning, lias succumbed to the inevita ble—gone the way of all good girls— and married an editor, Sheppard, of the Hock Kspids (Iowa) Renew, being the decidedly lucky fellow to capture Ihe prize. Well, Mate, we wish you plenty of “phat takes.” —A society should lie organized in Holt county, whose object shall be the | preservation of game during tbe season that it is unlawful to kill or capture. At tlie rate hunting is being carried on at the present time the large game will in a few years be exterminated. Let all I true sportsmen think this matter over, j talk it up, and let us do something to put a stop to the growing evil. —Dr. Leas, through the state fish j commissioners, has received 10,000 sal mon to put into the Elkhorn at this place. Now let our present legislature enact a law providing for fish-ways in the dams on the river so the fish can got up.—Kelii/h llep. That's just what should he done. It would he an injus- j lice to plant fish below theXeligh dam, so that they could not get into the upper river. • —W. F. Progress£ “Our old and val ued corresjiomlent*and friend, John J. McCatlerty (Alpha), of O'Neill Citv, has shuttled otf the mortal coil of Single blessedness, and is now; a happy, full lledged Benedict. Mac, if the hookers that we took to the success and happi ness of yourself and 8>xmse will have the desired effect you needn’t bother youiself about the future. It is secure for wealth, fame, glory aud happiness." —The Minneapolis Journal says that that irrepressible enthusiast, Charlie O .-.ins, is wild for ninety days over Northern Nebraska as a cattle raising region. He swears by all that is htilly j that two Texas steers turned loose in that marvelous region will in three years j amount to a herd of 5,000 Durham i milch cows and 10,000 Alderney licif- j ers. No feed, no slicker, no nothing , j millions hi it. Charlie is a cuss, and no ; discount. —A good nows reporter is wanted by The JfuoKTlEK in evert portion of the county anj unorganized territory, lie j brief and to the point, and do not deal iu personalities, which work injury to the paper, and cause ill feeling among ; neighbors. It is not right to make a cat’s-paw of a publisher by sending in items calculated to reflect discredit up on anyone, knowing that the. publisher is entirely ignorant with regard to the subject-matter. What is wanted is good, newsy news—that which will in terest everybody. —If y?u would hav£ any friends at all don't set yourself up for a critic. If you do not like anyone's nose, or object to anyone’s chin, don’t put your thoughts into words. If another’s man ners don’t please you, remember your own. Recollect that people are not all made to suit one taste. Take things as you find them, even a dinner ; after it is swallowed it cannot be made any better. Continual fault finding, contin ual criticism of the conduct of this, and speech of that one, I he dress of one, and the opinions of another, will make home the uuhappiest place under the sun. if you are never pleased with anyone, no oue will be pleased w ith you ; and if it is known you are hard to suit, few will take the pains to spit you. Rear these suggestions iu mind, aud they will do you good. —On or about the first of March next, a regular passenger train will be put on from Neligh to Mo. Valley and Omaha. The program is as follows’: To leave Ne ligh al/Out tlie middle of the forenoon. At Blair the train will lie divided, one section going across the river to Mo. Valley, and the other proceeding direct ly to Omaha, arriving there about the middle of the afternoon. West Point will be the division of this run, the tiro trains passing here at noon. An eating house is to be erected, and the twenty minutes stop necessary to take coal and water will be utilized by giving passen gers a chance to eat their dinner. This is a change that no one but those who have been compelled to travel on an accommodation train for a number of years will be aide to appreciate. The necessary rolling stock fur this new en terprise lias been ordered and the con tract calls for its delivery some time in February. This company lias tlio ma terial on hand for 200 miles of new rail road, and is now crossing it over the Missouri while it can be done cheaply, on the ice bridge. Twenty-live miles of the road will be built between Plain view and Creighton, and one hundred iand seventy-rive miles will be built on that main line. Without any doubt whatever two year* fiom now will see this road built into the southern portion of the Black Hills. The company has now fully aroused from the lethargy which overpowered it for so many years, and building operations will not cease until the road reaches a permanent ter minal point, even if they to go to Puget Sound, a fact which is far from improb hle.— IF.
