It is not generally known that
the pure food law prohibits color

June by the use of butter color.
The state canvassing board tab

that Judge Reese had a majority
over Judge Loomis of 24,406.
Anderson, republican candidate
for regent, had 32,918 over Sun-
dean and Coupland had 34,274
over Millnrd. Graves, prohibi
tion candidate for supreme judge,
polled 5,158 votes. Stebbins, so
cialist, got 3,200 votes for the
same office.
The wholesale house for whom
H. W. Lowe packed a large por
tion of his tomatoes, and who la
beled them with their own labels,
has informed Mr. Lowe that his
tomatoes took the prize at the
recent pure food exhibit in Oma
ha. This speaks well for Mr.
Lowe and one of Peru's thriving
young industries. Our town was
especially fortunate in securing
a man like Mr. Lowe to put in a
plant here. Peru Pointer.
There is not a harder worker
in, the county than Herb Weath

Herb is sorely afflicted. He has
been knocked out of the ring by
King Corn. During the husking
of last week Herb's hands became
infected and his arms became
badly swollen as a result of the
hard work. Several boils added
to his misery and he has been
compelled to lay off while taking
medical treatment. Auburn Re

having a fire last Friday evening.
For some reason the gasoline
lamp in the store would not
light when he first tried it. He
' pumped it up and tried it a sec
ond time, but still no light. He
pumped it up a third time, and
when he applied the match the
gasoline, which had run down
from the lamp on a show case
underneath, caught fire. The
doctor shut off the flow of gaso
line and the fire soon went out.
The glass top to the show case
was broken but this was about
the only damage done.
The easy financial condition of

Denise Adams Cox, son of Mr.
and Mrs. John T. Cox of Howe,
Nobr., died in Indianapolis, Ind.,
Nov. 24, 1807, aged 7 years, four
months and 1 day.
Little Denise was a bright, lov
able boy. Some time ago he be
gan to fail in health. The best
physicians in the cunty treated
him
and he was then taken to
Omaha. Recently he was taken
back to Indianapolis to consult
the old home physician, but noth
ing could be done.
The heartbroken father re
turned home Tuesday with the
remains of their dear one. The
funeral services were held Wed
nesday at the Methodist church
at Howe, conducted by Rev. G.
W. Ayers.
That Thanksgiving Dinner
We had our Thanksgiving din
ner at the Christian church, and
when we got there and saw the
provision that had been made to
feed the hungry,; we felt truly
thankful. We were a little un
easy, though, when we looked
around and saw Elder Sapp, El
der Gregg, Pres Barker, August
Quiller, Dr. Frazier, A. G. War
ren and a few more of that kind
standing around looking hungry,
but after we had sized ud the
beaping baskets full of good
things we were no longer fearful
and took a seat between Elders
Sapp and Gregg with great faith
in the ability of the ladies to see
that we got plenty to eat. And
we did. When Elder Gregg fi
nally had to cry enough (the ed
itor had quit long before this but
Barker and Doc Frazier
were eating as if they had just
got started) he called the atten-
ion of . the audience to two in
scriptions on the blackboard used
in reviewing the last Sunday
school lesson. The first was:
The Way to Live. The se'eond
one: Be Temperate. We were
all eating to live but few around
us had obeyed the second injunc
tion. For the first time wel fully
realized the usefulness of a
mouth patterned like Dr. Fra-
zier's, when we saw him eating
chicken, pie, cake, etc. It is not
very pretty but for utility it
takes the cake and the pie and
chicken and most every thing else
in sight.
