Clear Lemon Pie.
, DIssolvo thrco tablespoonfuls oi
corn starch and stir in ono and a half
pints of boiling water until It thick
ens. Just before setting this an!do to
cool add a dcsscrtspognful of butter.
Orato tho rinds and squeeze tho julco
of two lemons, stir with this one and
one-hnlf ctlpfuls'of sugar. Beforo the
corn starch is ontlroly cold, add lomon
and sugar. Line two pio plates with
pastry, stick with a fork to prevent
Msing unovenly and bake. Fill with
the lemon mixture and return to the
'oven until thoroughly heated; spread
jwlth a mcringuo made of tho whites
of threo eggs and sweetened. Browq
lightly. Serve cold.
Bachelor' Fry.
' Placo tho oysters flat and smooth in
m frying banket and dip for a half mo
ment in boiling water deep enough to
cover them; lift tho basket out, dip for
a moment in cold water and then lay
the oysters smooth between a folded
napkin to dry. Sprinkle them with
pepper, salt, a little grated nutmeg
and a squcozo of lemon juice, and let
them dry for an hour or so. When
ready to ubo dip them in a thin bat
ter and fry in hot olive oil, a fow at
a time. Sorvo on hot plates.

Barberry Preserve.
Take twice aa many sweet pears or
apples as barberries and three-fourths
as much sweetening, half sugar, halt
molasses. Put sugar and molasses on
to boll. When boiling put barberries
In, cook 15 minutes, then skim out bar
berries and put in pears or apples.
Cook till Boft; than put back barber
ries and let boil up.
Whole Wheat Gema.
Beat two eggs, without separating;
add to a cupful ofnilk, together wlfh
a tablcspoonful of molted butter, a tea
spoonful salt and one cup and a half
of wholo wheat flour Blfted with two
teaspoonfuls baking powder. Beat
thoroughly, pour into hot, woll-greaBed
gem pans and bako in a quick oven for
half an hour.
, Scrambled Eggs With. Cheese.
Break thrco ogga and slip thorn into
a saucepan, or blazor, of tho chafing
dish; beat thorn with a generous lump
of butter, two tablespoonfuls of grated
cheese,' with salt and pepper to taste.
It cooks In five minutes, and when just
tho right thicknesB pour Into a deop
hot dish, over somo fried toast.

Washington. While Immigration to
America from all countries showed,
during tho month of October, a con
siderable Increnso, being 29 per cent
greater than October, 1900, tho in-
creaao in Immigration from Japan
was greater than has been shown in
any ono month In tho history of tho
immigration service.
Tho restrictive regulations operat
ing against tho Japanese and Koreans
have been in forco for about seven
months, but notwithstanding this,
tho Immigration of Japanese constant
ly has Increased during that period.
Tho ofllcial figures show that dur
ing tho October, 1900, beforetho re
strictive regulations were thought of,
tho numbor of Japanese arrived in
this country was 081. During Octo
ber of this year tho number of Jap-
aneso arriving in America, not count
ing scores who wero smgglcd across
tho Canadian and Mexican borders
was 1,616, an increase of about 250
per cent.
While this enormous increase In
.Tapaneso immigration is not particu
larly alarming in tho minds of offi
cials of. tho government' becauso the
percentngo of Japanese immigrants is
not largo,, it has boon sufficient to
creato comment. No statement con
corning tho matter, however, can bo
obtained from any responsible offi
cial of tho department of commorco
and labor.

Washington. Treasury officials aro
greatly encouraged by tho fact that
tho applications for additional circu
lation continue to bo received in largo
numbers from national banks in all
sections of tho country. From the
first of the month up to last Saturday
shipments of additional batik notes
had actually been made to tho amount
of $11,182,150. On Monday" this
amount was increased by $2,582,950
and on Tuesday by $3,099,870, so that
the total Wednesday reached $16,844,'
970.
Bailey's Opinion of Congress.
El Paso, Tex. United States Sen-
ntor Bailoy, in a speech here Thurs
day beforo .1,000 people, made the fol
lowing statement: "I have been asked

Was Badly Needed.
The following colloquy Is said to
havo actually occurred during ono of
tho earlier battlea In tho Philippines:
A detachment of American infantry,
under orders to support a section of
Capt. Reilly's battery, wero halted for
quite a while on a perfectly flat mili
tary road in full view aud fine rango
of tho Filipino trenches. Of course, to

In this detachment was an Irishman
who had served his timo with the col
ors In tho British army before ho en
listed with Undo Sam. As a recruit
ho had been very prone to tell how tho

questions as to his experiences. While
tho bullets wero "plopping" down tho
road and kicking up tho gravel, a
young Yankee suddenly asked:
"Say, Mike, what do the British sol

Quick as a flash came tho retort:
"A British soldier has no head,

After a full two-minute pause, Miko
continued:

An Acute Observer.
A one-armed man sat down to his
noonday luncheon in a little restaur
