premacy of the world. Japan will lead

In looking over tho effects of a
Massachusetts millionaire recently, ills
executor, who had handled vast sums
until they grow to seem rather com
monplace, "discovered personal proper
ty, hitherto unknown, to the amount of
a million and a half." Tho Incident
holps one to rcall.o how large a large
fortune Is. And yet tlio emotions of
those er.ecutors were only such as poor
folk may experience. Who lias not

Tho events of the present war in the
far Hast have shown that the Japanese
known to tiie nations of tho world as
"the little brown men" are the equals
of any other soldiers on the globe,
whether the test has been one of brav
ery, endurance or accuracy In tiring.
Tho severest tests of modern warfare
have been repeatedly, for mouths past,
applied to these small soldiers of the
Orient Pitted against soldiers of large
size and boasted endurance, they have
emerged from the smoke of conflict in
every Instance, whether on sea or land,
victoriously.
It is certain that the schools are pe
culiarly the victims of the faddists. A
fow years ago all our educational au
thorities went daft on the subject of
vertical handwriting. It never occur
red to them to tlnd out whether tho
merchants who hlro bookkeepers ap
proved of this style of writing. There
was no thought of tho individuality
of tho child of which ocwlunrlly the
handwriting is supposed to be the ex
pression. So tlio vertical style was
adopted. Now we are informed that
it Is bolng abandoned because the men
with Jobs to give will not tolerate it.
This is but one illustration.
The growth of the American navy
has been unprecedented in the annals
of the world, It is a good navy, con
sisting of stout ships manned by able
men and intelligently directed, but
some of tho naval officers and officials
of the Navy Department are beginning
to ask what good it is to build tho
ships If thore are no men to man them.
Their queries are not unreasonable.
There 1m not ship in ti e ivr; " .
is not short of men and officers, and
Jn order to overcomo this lack some
ten or more vessels which nro In need
ef some repairs will bo put out of com
mission for tho tlmo being, not because
tho repairs are so serious as to call for
this step, but simply because of the
shortage of the men behind the guns.
Tho English, as a ppoplo, are univer-
ny unown as a uauon or very siuruy
rights, and a rocont coso in Liverpool
illustrates thoso characteristics strik
ingly. A purchasor of toa coinpmiuid
thajt ho had to pay for the bag at tha
tea rate, when, ho bought tea, because
tho grocer put tlio ton in tho bag and
weighed tlio bag and tea together. Tho
case was taken beforo a magistrate's
court and the hapless grocer wan fined.
Ho appealed tho case and tho high
court has decided that ho was within
his rights in weighing the bag with
tea becauso that was tho universal
practice and custom, wlilch was gen
erally understood anil acquiesced in.
Tho striking thing about tlio whole
ease and tho proceedings in connection
with it Is tho extraordinary tenacity
with which t)io Ifinglishman pursues
little things and the serious and order
ly manner In which he sots about to
regulate the minutest matters which
concern his pocketbook.
It Is Idle to go to college without a
lively appreciation of the main busi
ness for which one goes. Thut is to do
college work., A college degree worth
tho having can be won by nothing but
serious, resolute, systematic study.
Habits must be regular. Health and
rational living and strong purpose are
vital factors. Rocrcatlon is necosBnryi
to sound health, and companionship is
essential to sane living. So a rational
division of time is important A man
eannot rest too much and do his work,
nor can he work overmuch without en
dangering his powers of work. Ho
cannot by any course of irrational
pleasure rob his body and mind of their
native strongcii and natural zest with
out failing in the main thing for which
he goes to college. 'Hhen there is tho
problem of student friendships and or-j
ganlscatlons. In many cases tendencies
have gone so far before leaving homo
that they settle tills-matter at once. If
not, It settles itself very quickly when
the time conies. It Is Interesting, some
times amusing, to see how quickly a
now studont settles down with a fra
ternity, or with the Christian Associa
tion, or with a literary society, or with
a scientific club, or with Hie "barbar
lans." Close association with congenial
spirits Is natural, and It Is well. ' A
boy should mnko close friendships with
those whose friendships mean the most
to him. There Is something more than
friendship in the student organizations.
There Is good experience In helping to
manage an organization, In the neces
sity of giving way to others at times,
in the habit of standing up for some
thing, and In the necessity of so steer
ing tho affairs of an organization that
one can stand up for It. A student do
nlos himself much If he does not go In
with some college organization.
Sancho Panza said: "God bless the
man who llrst invented sleep." To this
may be added a blessing for tho Lon
don physician who Is putting In a pro
test against early rising. The name of
the pliyslclau Is not given, but who
ever he Is he deserves a benediction.
"May ho live long and prosper." Tills
Wise doctor says: "To be forced to
get up early grinds the soul, curdles
the blood, swell the spleen, destroys
ail good intentions and disturbs all day
the mental activities. Criminals ure
always recruited from tlio early-rising
class." How different this from the
old New England adage about early
to bed and early to rise and tho ad
vantages of the early bird and ail that!
Wake up at 5 o'clock in the morning
and see who it is that is stirring. Is
It the wealthy? Is It the healthy or
the wise? No, it is the milkman, who
would not think of getting up early
If dally necessity did not compel him.
Is he getting rich? Not too fast, espe
cially If ho Is honest. Or It is the news
paper carrier or the street car con
ductor or some other whose work com
pels him to be up early. There Is not
a rich man among them. The man
who t ut liberty to wake up leisurely,
to coinn down to his break-fust -with
out any hurried preparations and who
goes to his business after he has read
the morning paper Is far moro likely
to be healthy and wlso than tlio man
In a rush, and he is certainly a far
more agreeable man to meet either In
a social or business vay. If one must
get up early, if fate decides there Is
no other way, resignation Is called
for, but let no man who gets up early
think ho Is living the Ideal llfo or that
his action calls for Kpeclal praise.
Even though he may bi amiable ho
would be far more amiable if ho
would let nature hare her way and
wake up. slowly. Who knows but Unit
In the last analysis tho origin of all
evil is the getting up too early, bo
ginning tho day "wrong end to," and,
tlndlng out when it la too late that a
little more sloop, a little more slumber
would have made the fuce of all crea
tlon look brighter?
