Miss Eflie Stout came In from Aus
burn Thursday of last week on a visit

W. P. Tidrow visited Nemaha
friends and relatives last Saturday and
Sunday. Will is now located at Hum
boldt. Miss Leta Linn ef Lincoln, who has
been visiting friends in Neaaba and
vicinity, went to Sbubert the first of
the week.

been visiting at Wabash, Neb.rM res

The telephone company expects to
have the country line southwest from
town ready for operating by the 15th
of this month.
H. M. Tollinger went to Omaha
Monday and from there goes to Sioux
City, Iowa. He expects to be gone a
week or ten days.
Several Nemahaites nttended the ne
gro picnic at Falls City Tuesday and
Wednesday. They report a much
smaller crowd than usnal.
G. W. Hawxby began work on his
house on his father's farm, near Brack
en, Thursday. Wm. Eagle of Shubert
is doing the carpenter work.
W. H. Hay and H. R. Howe of the
First National bank of Auburn were
Nemaha visitors Tuesday and gave us
a call and some good advice,
Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Shubert are
now at Kansas City, Mo., where they
expect to remain for aome time. Mr.
Shubert is having his eye treated.
The weather for twe or three days
last week was very cool almost cool
enough to require fires. But it has
made up for it this week by being very
warm.
Mrs. Merrit and Miss Victoria Mers
ritt, who have been visiting their son
and brother, Jack Merritt, in Aapins
wall precinct, returned to Brownville
Monday.
Tarn Crummel of Auburn has a crew
of men at work putting in a steel
bridge across ' Whiskey Run," a mile
south of town. The old- bridge was
taken out Wednesday.

the Rebekah lobge Wednesday evening
and we had a most delightful time.

Strain, went with her.
Ben Neal was Bhaking bauds with
Nemaha frieads Thursday. Ben has
been in Oklahoma for the past two
years. He drew a good claim near
Lawton two yearn ago, which he has
just sold.
John Stephenson of Auburn waa
visiting some of his many Nemaha
friends Thursday. We have only two
things against John his politics and
because he moved to Auburn instead
of Nemaha,
Conrad Schreinor, an old citizen of
Brownville, died at his heme at 1
o'clock a. m. Tuesday. Mr; Schreiner
had been in poor health for a longtime
The funeral was held Wednesday.
The deceased was a brother-ln law of
Mrs. Peter Kerker.
The night cap social at the home of
Dr. H. S. Gaither last Saturday night
was a meat successful affair in every
respect. The lawn was lighted with
lamps, lanterns and Chinese lanterns
presented a beautiful appearance. A
goodly sum was taken in.
August 27 seems to be a popular day
this year for old settlers' picnics. Ne
maha will have her picnic on that day,
the old settlers of Lancaster county
have set that date for their bicnic at
Lincoln, and Nebraska City will also
have an old settlers' picnic on that day
The old settlers of Richardson county
will have their annual gatherlug on
the 20th and 27th. But we venture
the assertion, without fear of succesas
lul contradiction, that the Nemaha'
picnic will be the best of all.

The Cardinals elected a successor to
Pope Leo XIII Tuesday forenoon. On
the seventh ballot Cardinal Sarto, pa
triarch of Venice, was elected. He
selected the title of Pius X. He is 08
years of age and belongs to the more
liberal and progressive wing of Cathol
icism.
Mr. B. L. Burt of Anderson, Iowa, a
frtend of James Hiatt arrived in town
Wednesday morning He will visit at
the home or J. R. Russell until Friday
when he expects to take Mr. Hiatt
home with him for a few'weeks' visit.
Mr. Hiatt Is in poor health and. very
feeble. ,

Misses Mary and Minnie Schreiner
of Severance, Kansas, were gueats of
Mrs. P. Kerken Wednenday, leaving
Thursday morning. Tney are nieces
of the late Conrad Schreiner of Brown
ville. They attended the funeral of
their uncle Wednesday forenoon, corns
ing down to Nemaha with Mr. and
Mr.. Kerker.
Miss Perl Minick has bten appointed
instructor of vocal music at the Peru
normal school. Will F. Preach, son
of Wm. French of London precinct,
has been appointed assistant to II. B.
Duncanson of the department of bios
logical research. Prof. French has been

for the past year.

H. T. Mlniok showed us seme speci
mens of a small fruit called the straw
berry raspberry Saturday. The fruit
partakes of the nature of both th
strawberry aud raspberry ; grows on a
low bush begins bearing about the mid
dle ef July and bears until frost.
There are blooms, green berries and
ripe berries on the same bush at the
sane time.
The Little Girls' Band of Hamburg,
Iowa, has been engaged to play at the
old settlers' picnic Aug. 27. This
band is composed of Prof. Booe and
wife and ten little girls, none of them
over twelve years of age. These little
I ad i es belong to some of the best famn
ilies of Hamburg and have been cares
fully trained by Prof. Booe. They
are highly praised by the Omaha Bee,
WorldsIIerald, Hon. W. J. Bryan und
other papers and prominent men who
have heard them. They will remain
over night and give an open air cons
cert in the park the night of the picnic.
