Draftsman Hubbard, of the board
of irrigation, is making plans for
ineanuring weirs to be placed in all
irrigation ditches under the provi
sions of the law which was passed
by the state legislature. The plans
will be sent out to all persons using
wuter from public streams for irri
gation. They will provide a means
whereby the tlow through each ditch
van be determined and thereby it is
hoped to secure a perfectly equitable
distribution of water. In practice
each ditch will be equipped with a
flume and the ditch both above and
below the flume will be made as near
ly level as possible. This will be ac
complished by placing heavy timbers
about 100 feet above and below the
Jlume. These timbers will be placed
as nearly on the level as possible,
and will ensure uniform conditions
of flow. When the water is let into
the ditch the depth of the flow and
the speed of the current over" the
floor of the flume will be measured
with a measuring stick. If the ditch
owner is not getting all the water
he is entitled to the headgate on the
diteli will be raised until he secures
the proper amount, lly the means
of the measuring stick then it will
bo possible to determine at any time
what amount of water the ditch own
er in entitled to.

A man of a mercenary spirit had several
cons, one of whoio was on the eve of his
twenty-lirst birthday. The father had al
ways been a strict disciplinarian, keening
his boys well under parental charge, allow
ing them few liberties and making them
work hard, relates Youth's Companion.
It was with a feeling of considerable sat
isfaction that the young man rose on the
morning of his birthday and began to collect
his personal belongings preparatory to start
ing' out in the world.
The fanner, seeing hi3 son packing his
trunk, which he rigntly judged to be evi
dence of the early loss of a good farmhand,
stopped at the uoor of the young man's
room and asked what he was going to do.
The boy very promptly reminded his fath
er of the day of the month and the year, and
declared his intention of striking out in the
world on his own account.
"Not much you -won't," shouted the old
man, "at least not for awhile, yet. You
wasn't born until after 12 o'clock, so you
can just take ofF them good clothes and fix
to give me another half-day's work down in
the potato patch."
