Sun Francisco, Jan. 4. A collision
nt Hen early Tlmrstlny morning be
tween the steamship Walla Walla and
an unknown sailing vessel remitted
in the binking of the steamship and
the probable loss of at least 41 lives.
The Walla Walla, owned by the Pa
cine Coast Steamship company, sailed
from San Francisco January 1 for
Puget sound ports. She earned 30
first-class passengers, 28 sccond-olnsn
and a crew of 80 men. When oil' Capo
Mendocino, on the California coast,
at 4:10 Thursday morning an iron
bark, believed to be French, loomed
up in the haze and crashed into thu
Walla Walla's bow. Then the sailing
vessel slid oit into the darkness and
was seen no more. All the passengers
and crew of the Walla Walla, except
the few on watch, were asleep, but
were aroused by the crash. The
steerage quarters were in the bow
mid it is believed that some of tho
steerage passengers and crew were
crushed to death. A big hole was
made in the steamer's bow and she
sank in 35 minutes. The officers and
crew maintained strict discipline and
boats and life rnfts wore lowered.
All who were not killed in the colli
sion got off, except Capt. Hall, who
went down with his ship. Ho wns
picked up later by one of the boats,
uninjured, with the exception of a
few bruises. There was a choppy
sea riming and the small boats could
not. make a landing on the shore, a
few miles distant. They drifted
nbout all day and finally 6.r peoplo
were picked up by the steamer Dis
patch, which took them to Eureka.
Another boat, under command of En
gineer Brown and containing 13 per
sons, attempted to land nt Trinidad
and was swamped. John Wilkinson,
quartermaster; William Mnrtel, fire
man; L. D. Ilubc, passenger, and
three unknown men were drowned.

"Yes," said the manager of tho de
funct Uncle Tom's Cabin company, ac
cording to the Cleveland Plnin Dealer,
"It was our dog that broke up the
show."
"The dog, eh? What was the mat
ter with him?"
"Too fastidious. You never saw
such a hound in your life. You know
the play, of course. We tie a piece of
meat in the folds of Eliza's frock, and
that's what draws the dogs after her
when she runs across the blocks of
ice. Well what do you think this
dog demanded?"
"Can't imagine."
"Porterhouse beefsteak, sir, and
with the tenderloin left inl Yes, sir.
How's that? And you couldn't fool
him. lie wouldn't chase Eliza a foot
unless tho meat was a choice cut. No,
sir. And, by gum, sir, our company
had to live on liver and bacon so that
blamed dog could have his steak. Yes,
sir."
"The demand was too much for
you, wus it?"
"No, it wasn't. That is, it wasn't
until he began to insist upon mush
rooms with his steak. Then we just
threw up our hunds and quit."

A Sunday school teacher in Carthage, 111.,
has a data of little girls, anil it is his custom
to tell tlicm each Sunday of ouc little in
cident that hat happened in the week, and
request the children to quote a verse of
Scripture to illustrate the story. In this
way she hopes to impress the usefulness of
Biblical knowledge upon the little ones.
One Sunday she told her class of a cruel
boy who would catch cats and cut oil their
tails. "Now, can any little girl tell me of
an appropriate verse?" she asked.
There was a pause for a few moments,
when one of the little girls arose and in a
solemn voice said: "Whatsoever God has
joined together let no man put asunder."

Catarrh has already become a na-'
tlonal curfcc. Its ravages extend from
ocean to ocean.
More than one-half of the people nre
affected by It. It has become such a
serious matter that it has passed the.
boundaries of the medical profession
and become a national question. Sen
ators ure talking nbout it; Congress
men arc discussing it.
They arc not only considering the
extent tind chronic nature of the dis
ease, but the possibility of finding a na
tional remedy to meet this national ca
lamity. The catarrh remedy, Peruna, seeniB
to be the main expectation in this di
rection. Dr. Ilartman, President of the Tlnrt
man Sanitarium, devised the remedy,
Peruna, over forty years ago, and the
remedy as a eauirrh cure has been
years.
It stands to-dny before tho nnllon
as a thoroughly tested, accurately bc1
entiile internal remedy for catarrh.
There are practically no medicinal
rivals in the Held.
Peruna is not a local application or
temporary relief; it is a permanent
cure. Peruna is a sywtcauic remedy.
It eradicates catarrh from the sys
tern. It cures catarrh wherever lo
cated. Its cures arc radical and last
ing. Therefore, Pcrunn is. receiving th
