Tho very nowost thlmr In railway car nrcliltucluro Is a imKscmrer car for steam roiul. built very inueh on the lines of the sunitnor trolley car, except that this cur can open op tho ton as well as tho sides. Tho car, an Illustration of winch Is herewith shown, was built by tho Pullman Company for Tho American Tourist Association of Chicago, ami was Intended as an observation car In tho preat can tvtnci of mountainous Mexico. Tho car was Invented by Hcuu Campbell, tho Mexican traveler, anil caiuo about as follows: Somo years airo, whon Mr. Campholl was travellnjc through tho prcat Tamosopo Canyon, ho hail a scat on tho sldo of tho car next to tho mountain, tho rocks of tho cliff wore wUhln two foot of tho window, and of course ho could net not even u idlmpso of tho canyon, as all tho windows on tho other stdc of thu enr were taken up by the occupants of tho adjoining scats. Determined to vlow tho maRnlllccnco of tho canyon, Mr. Campbell returned to Las Canons, and throuuh tho courtesy of rillwny olllctals iniulo tho world famous rldo on board what tho superintendent nailed his "trolley", an open car with scats for eight persons, and with this rldo riuno tho Idea that tho only wnv tho mncnlllcenco of Mexico's mountains could bo enjoyed to tho fullest extent would bo from a car without shies or top. Solillt-r In (he I'rrncli rorclKTii J.c- urloii Ilnvc Anylliliit; Hut nn 12iiny Tlmr, The French foreign legion, which Is again the subject of Parisian political gossip, offers about the hardest mil itary service in the world, and no oho who knows enters it until he has ex hausted all other means of support or wishes to bury himself, says n London paper. Men of nil nations are in its ranks, many of them hard characters, criminals and jailbirds, and it is al ways sent by Franco to do the dirty work which thnt country unturally docs not choose to Impose upon Its own children. Thus it has held the frontiers of the African colonies, where every now and then a post is cut to bits bj a wild Arab tribe. The fever-infested portions of Cambodia and Indo-Chlna, which Lodi has described, huve also been the sceno of its exploits. The discipline, too, ia most severe. Flogging Is a dally occur rence and capital punishment is the result of the most trivial offenses. Thus the cases of insanity In the legion are of a much larger number than in any other branch of tho French service. A physician who has been studying tho insanity of the legionaries says that a majority of tho cases are well devel oped when the men enlist, since few sane men would ever accept the condi tions know to exist in this corps. Ho odds that in his opinion many men shot for breaches of discipline were not mentally responsible, and he says that tho same trouble may cause the insub ordination among the French troops with the allies in China. INVENTED BY A WOMAN. The Spindle nail I. mini Witi Orlgl- tuilly DexlKiicil by a Chinese Worker. All women are not degraded in China. Witness the dowager empress, who rose, by the force of her own will, from the. position of a slave to that of ruler over the most populous nation on the globe. Notwithstanding the prejudice against the sex niuong tho .Mongols women occasionally break through the barriers and nehieve distinction. In Shanghai, the metropolis of tho most coveted section of that vast em pire, is a temple erected in honor of Huang, a woman deified for her grcnt service to her people, and Chinese men do not disdain to worship before her image. Centuries ago an elderly lady of good family and condition, who hnd hitherto lived in tho region of Kwan-Tung, re moved to Wu-Ni-Ching, near Shang hai, where she spout the remainder of her life, Since the lady happened to bo Huang, this simple event revolution ized tho province in which she made her home, ft was a great revolution, yet the most conservative will not ac cuse her of having left "woman's sphere," since her instruments were those associated with countless wom en, from Fenelope, the terrible Fates, and the "virtuous woman" of Solomon's praise, down to our own grandmothers the spindle mid the loom. Cotton fabrics iave been used to some extent in China for 4,000 years, but tho cotton interest, now so im portant, received its first real impetus about SOO years ago. THE RICHARDSON CASE. Two sensa tions resulted yesterday from the evi dence adduced at the inquest over the murder of Frank Itlchardsnn, the mil lionaire merchant, who was shot down In his home ut Savannah Christ mas evrt. Tiic first sensation was testi mony establishing tlio probable inno cence of the business partner of tho murdered man, who hns been under suspicion us the murderer, it having been alleged thnt the partner, just previous to the murder, was licensed by llichnrdKon of undue intimacy with Mrs. Itichnrdson. Trie second sensa tion wiih the fact that the testi mony tended to fix the re sponsibility for the crime on n woman and her adviser, a traveling man, who are alleged to have black mailed the deceased out of various sums of money, covering a period of almost a year. Charles Stanton, superintendent of the electric light station, testified thnt Itlchardson was very much af fected of Ooldie Whitehead, a young woman who resided at Stanberry, Mo., with whom Mr. Itlchardson had been on intimate terms and who ap peared to be hounding him for money. Sensational evidence is expected to day. YEAR'S RAILROAD STATISTICS I'owor 3111cm of New Traclc I.11I1I In 1000 Than In lUOD-Tc.xtiH I.emN with .'118 .Mlk'H- KaiiHHH Had None. Chicago, Dec. !2'j.
