Conover & Veach will buy hogs at Ne.naha every second and fourth Wednesday in each month until further notice. Irvin Hadlock returned to Nemaha Tuesday, after a two weeks' stay at Omaha. He did not succeed in getting into anything. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Fox started last Friday on a visit to friends at Table Rock, Pawnee City and vicinity. They drovo out there. John C. Bousfleld. of Auburn, was in town Monday and Tuesday. He bought some young cattle in this vicin ity, which he shipped Tuesday night. Mrs. Lillie Walsh, of Lincoln, has been in Nemaha for the pawt week, vis iting friends and looking after some business for her father, William H. Hoover. Insurance men were well represented in Nemaha this week. J. It. Cooper was in town Tuesday and Thursday, W, B Harm&n Tuesday, and P. D. Ailor Wednesday. J. W, Webber sold about 2000 bush els of wheat a few days ago for 81.12J4 a bushel. Ho acknowledges that the price of wheat and silver do not always rise and fall together. Dr, Worthy W, Frazier, ion of David Frazier, of Nemaha, has located at Yutan, Neb., and is getting a good practice wo understand, Ilia many friends in Nemaha will bo pleasod to learn of his success, Miss Naoma Haiti) had a birthday party Friday night of last week, at the residence of her parants, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Haiti), south of Nemaha. Tho yoiiflg people who woro invited re port a splendid time. The Epworth League will give an ice cream and strawberry festival in the lower room of the opera house on the night of commencement Friday evening, May 27th. Everybody is in vited. Best of cream aud berries. A PLEASANT SURPRISE. There was a pleasant surprise at the residence of John C. Clark, in this vi o nity, on the 20th of April, it being t io 72nd birthday of Uncle John, at he iscallwd. About ten o'clock we saw teams coming from north and south our old neighbors and friends. When tjey begun to get out each one had well Qlled baskets They came in and took possession, eeut tho old wife off, and at noon had tho dinner, and such a dinner as none but the Pleasant Valley ladies know how to get up. Elder Goodo, of St. Joseph, took one end of tho table, tho host tho other, beside his brother, Henry Clark. The dinner passed with eating and cracking jokes. About thirty grown folks and not so many children woro present. After it was over some one asked Uncle John, "How did you stand the racket?" He said, "All right; i am ready for an other one." We wish to thank the dear old friends and connection for tho very pleasant time they gave ua, which will long be remembered by us both. John C. Clark and Wifk. Harry McCandiess informs ub that he has sold his grain buying business to A. N. Harris, an old grain buyer of Verdon, who will take charge of the elevator at the Siding Monday. Mr. Harris 1b said to be a tirst class man and a rustling grain buyer. He will probably move to Nemaha, and wo utii derstand he will buy grain in Nemaha and may build an elevator here. vVe trust Harry will not leave here. Decoration and Memorial Day will be observed in Nemaha Sunday, May 20th. At 0 o'clock all old soldiers and all others who can are requested to meet and proceed to the cemetery and decorate the graves. At 2:30 p. m. memorial services will be held at the M. E. church. Rev. Mr. Diltz, of Brownvillo, will preach the sermon, We can now "nello" to Brownvillo, Peru and Howe, the telephone lines having been opened for business to those points Thursday. Wo shall soon be connected with Shubert, as the wiro is now being stretched between Nema ha and that point. Harvo Modoland, who was formerly conductor on the B. & M. between this city and Superior, is now running on tho St. Joseph & Grand Island railroad, and at present is weighing mail for the government over that road. At the residence of his daugh ter, Mrs. Eliza CaBtor, 0J miles west of Nemaha, Saturday morning, May 7th, 1808, Mr. Levi Johnson, aged 73 years. The deceased has boon gradually fail ing for the pust yt'ar. A few weeks ago he was taken sick with catarrhal fever, and in his enfeebled condition he was net able to withstand its rav ages. Mr. Johnson was one of our oldest citisens, arriving in Nemaha in Juno, 1855, with J. P. Hoover and his father, Dr. Hoover, and others. Ho lived hero here and in tho vicinity the most of the time since that date, and had an extensive acquaintance. The funeral services were held at the M. E churcn Sunday at 11 o'clock a. m. Rev. J, P. Waldion preached the funeral sermon, The church could not hold the friends who met to pay their last respects to the deceased. Haller's Headache Cure always gives instant relief. William Bant, died at hia residence, three and one-half miles southwest of Nemaha, Sunday, May 8th, 1808, aged 68 years. Mr. Bantz had boon in poor health for some time. About seven weeks previous to his death ulceration of the stomach set in. His suffering, which was intense nud continuous, wus borne patiently and witheut murmur or complaint. Mr. Bant, was one ef tho older set. tiers of Nemal a county, coining heie about 33 years ago. He had one of the most beautiful homes in tho country. Ho was a great lover of fruit and flow ets, and had a groat variety ot line fruit and ilowers. Mi , Bant, was highly respected by tho entire community. His cheerful greeting will be misled by all. Tho funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Nemaha Tuesday, May 10th, at 11 o'clock a. m. Rev. C. II. Gilmore preached n line sermon. Tho hinging by Messrs, Melvin.Dorram, Rumbaugh nud Crother and Misses Maud Minick, Minnie May, Veva Clark and Ethel Paris was excellent and was greatly appreciated. The church was crowded and a great many were not able to get in. Tho cusket was covered with wreathes of beautin ful flowers. The bereaved wife and children have tho sympathy of all. To the many friends and neighbors who wore so kind and attentive during tho sicknesH of Mr. Bant, to those who looked after the arrangements for the funeral, and to the members ef the choir the relatives of the deceased do sire to return sincere thanks, Mrs. C. M. ICauffman died Sunday, May 8th, 1808, at tho residence noar Brownvillo, Mrs. Kauffmnn has been suffering from a complication ot disi eases for bomo time. Saturday night she was apparently feeling as well as usual. Sunday morning she could not bo awakened. Physicians were called but she never regained consciousness, dying that evening. The funeral ser vices were held at the residenco at 2 o'clock the next day, Rev. O. II. Gil more preaching the sermon. The de ceased came to Brownvillo with her husband in 1808. She leaves a hus band and six children, who will Badly miss tho wife and mother.
