Munkicn, of Vincent, In., was made so mad by being twitted at the supper table about bis love for Miss Peterson that he arose and shot Osborn Peterson, her brother, and then wounded Fred Larson. Tho accident was caused by the train breaking in two. A valuable race horse, owned by .1. I). Craig, of Paris, Tex., was instantly killed, and her driver, who was in the same car, seriously injured. Tin: meeting of the Cuban congress at Caniaguey decided that there was no hope of intervention from the United States, and voted to accept nothing short of complete freedom from Spanish rule. They would ac cept United Slates protectorate, but they will fight against annexation or autonomy. Six hundred Sac and Fox, Pawnee and Osage Indians recently held a grand ghost and medicine dance on the Pawnee reservation in the Indian territory. A large part of them stripped to the skin and painted them selves in the most gorgeous style. Enoinkhk Patisicic McNulty was doing some work under his engine at Gladstone, Minn., when a freight struck and moved it and the wheels cut oil' his head. Tin: barn of .Joseph Paters, a farmer near Kllingham, 111., containing 1,000 bushels of wheat, 700 bushels of oats, four horses and farming implements was recently burned. .John Ror.citp.iiT, a prosperous Ger man farmer near Carroll, la., shot his wife and his six children on the night of tho 2(lth and then committed suicide. No motive for the terrible tragedy was known, as the family lived happily together. Had blood has existed for a long time between the Poles of two board ing houses at (lirardville, Pa., and on the 27th it was brought to a climax by a blood' riot, in which at least nine men received fatal injuries and possibly two score others were more or less .seriously wounded. The battle was the outcome of a quarrel over the Ilazloton troubles. The men fought like demons, using axes, knives guns and other weapons. Some of the ring leaders were arrested. A convention of live stock sanitary inspectors took place ut Fort Worth, Tex., on the 27th. The dipping ex periments for destroying the tick which causes Texas fever was one of the principal subjects of discussion. The resolutions committee agreed on a report requesting the secretary of agriculture to fix tho time for quaran tine to go into effect as .January 1 and the date of its removal as November 1. ALASKA. Niolson, master of the tug Pio neer, says: Three men came to Skaguay beach on Monday night with a story to tho effect that at Sheep camp, at :!!() o'clock Monday morning a peculiar sound from the southwest side of tho mountain was heard and, before tho residents of the camp could fully dress, they found themselves rapidly borno down the canyon on a mass of moving debris from the moun tain side. A majority of tho residents of Sheep camp escaped, althougli nearly the entire village was destroyed. The slide struck tho town in tho northern part, where nearly all tho packers wero quartered In tents and asleep. The main part of the slide from the mountain missed Sheep camp proper, although from the report very little of tho town remains. The packers' camp was wholly carried away, and it is impossible to learn the names of the unfortu nates, as they were all known by their cognomens, such as .lack, .Jim, Dick and the like. Uos- land, of Hay City, Mich., members of the social democracy committee named to pick a bite for the proposed co-operative commonwealth, left for Nash ville last night to confer with R. I. Jlinton, the other member of the committee. From Nashville tho three will go to Olympia, Wash. There they will confer with state oflicials of Washington regarding what help will be extended by the state to the colonizers if they decide to make the first large venture in that state. It is asserted that the leading otlieials and the farming elements of the state are strongly in favor of the movement. The committee has been notified that already 810,000 has been appropriated by the state for irrigation purposes and promises have been made that act ive support will be given. A LIGHT IGNITES GAS. Kxplofilon In mi Illinois Mino Kills nml WouimIh Several Men. Maiuon, 111., Sept. 25. One man was killed, throe fatally injured and six were severely burned and bruised by an explosion of gas in tlie Williamson county coal mines yesterday. An un known miner is still imprisoned in tiio shaft and was undoubtedly instantly killed. The gas which caused the ex plosion accumulated during the night near the mouth of the main shaft. A shift of 45 men went down in the cage at seven o'clock. They had proceeded only a short distance up tlie main gangway, when the lamp on the lead er's cap ignited a large body of gas. A terrible explosion resulted. Those who were able to crawl back to the foot of the shaft signaled for the cage, which bad been blown to the surface by the force of the explosion. Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 25. J. W. MeCown wants his money back. He lost it 81,250 in a "dynamite bucket shop," he says, and unless there is a mistake in the Missouri statutes he may get it back, for there is a section that fits his case and all other similar cases exactly. Hrielly, section 5200 of the revised statutes of Missouri, 1SSS), and as early as lb7'J, says that '"Any per son who shall lose any money or prop erty at any game or gambling device may recover the same by civil action." The Missouri reports show that the law was once in successful operation aud was sustained by the courts. In the Missouri appeals it is cited on puge -10. but of late years it has fallen into disuse aud seems to have been forgotten. Mr. iIim'Ichoii Not Indicted. Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 25. Mrs. Elizabeth .Jackson, owner of the .lack son laundry, was discharged from cus tody by tlie grand juiy. She was charged with complicity in the mur der of her husband by Dr. (Joddard. The grand jury examined witnesses for three days 'and several of them were in favor of indicting her, but the others thought tho evidence was in sufllcient to convict. Could Not I. mm tho .SuriiliiH. In the notice to the public tho reason assigned was that it could not secure borrowers enough for its large surplus of deposits.
