Samuel Houk was drowned atSt.De roin Thursday afternoon, He has been engaged for some time in running the cable ferry at that point. He was in the small boat connected with the ferry and was holding to a rope attached to the cable while Henry Lemon rowed the boat. The wind and the pulling of the rope capsized the boat. Lemoa managed to get hold of the boat and clung to it until he was rescued by Bob Ross. Houk, who could not swim, sank at once, His body has not been recovered. Three of the men plead guilty to the charge of burglary, and last Saturday Judge Stull sentenced two of them to three years in the penitentiary and one to two years. They claim to be from Chicago. No serious damage was dono. The city officials of Auburn have been having trials and tribulations re cently. Pending the hearing of the new trial the mayor ordered the street com missioner to open the street. When this was attemted the mayor, J. W. Darrah, Street Commissioner C. J Harnes and Marshal Joe Colby were arrested for contempt of court and committed to jal Friday of Inst week Their attorney applied to Judge Stull for their release, but he refused to or der then: released unless they would give bond to keep the peace, but this they refused to do. A J. Burnham, their attorney, then went to Lincoln and applied to the supremo court and to the district judges of Lancaster county for a writ of habeas corpus, but was refused.
