quarters of the Cuban legation in this
city wus tho center of interest to a
number of callers yesterday, who had
come to express their sorrow at tho
death of Ocu. Maceo and to offer their
sympathy, and, in some cases, help for
tho Cuban cause. Thcso callers in
cluded a number of congressmen and
two senators (whoso names tho Cuban
representative declined to disclose),
who told him of their desiro to sco
somo action by congress that would bo
of assistance to the insurgents. Senor
Quesada authorizes his formor state
ment that tho Cubans havo enough
men and leaders to gain tho causo for
which they aro fPrhtinsr. They can
avail themselves of 0:1,000 men and
more if necessary, but what they need
is arms and ammunition nnd medicine
for tho sick and wounded.
Missouri's Voto Next to Illinois.

voto of Missouri at tho recent election
now places it ahead of Indiana nnd
next to Illinois in tho roil of states.
Tho total voto was 003,127, a gain of
131.312, or about 25 per cent, over four
years ago, which is a remarkable in
crease during that period. Tho demo
cratic gain was 54.04S, while the repub
lican increaso was 77,294. Of the latter
tho increase in St. Louis alono was 30,-

over tho roportcd treacherous assas
sination of Gen. Maceo appears to bo
general, and from all tho western
statos, and tho transmississippl statos
in particular, havo come a flood of let
ters and tolegrnms of protest to mem
bers and sonators. Tho members from
Missouri nnd Kansas havo been flooded
with them. With public indignation
at fever heat throughout tho country,
tho question is how long can congress
bo restrained from taking action. Tho
most alarming phnso of tho situation,
from tho standpoint of tho admin
istration, bent on preserving neu
trality, Is tho news coming
daily, from Missouri, Arkansas,
Texas, North and South Carolina,
Virginia nnd Kansas of the organiza
tion of bodies of men, for tho most part,
trained In tho uso of arms and edu
cated in military tactics. The statement
was mado last night that within two
weeks tho Cuban junta could mobilizo
on tho southern seaboard a half mil
lion Americuns, eager togotoCuba and
fight Spain. Tills is tho feature which
gives intenso interest to overy move in
tho Cuban situation. Under pressuro
from their constituents the western
and southern senators and members
nro likoly to ignore the administration
and take some action which will make
exceedingly strained tho relations be

General Wilson has issued an order ex
tending the housc-to-houso collecting
and delivery letter system, so as to
proviuo lor tno salo of postage nnd
special delivery stamps through orders
to letter carriers on slips, contained in
a unique official stamp-selling envel
ope, to bo furnished by tho postal im
provement company. Tho order pro
vides for ono of tho most radical im
provements yet made in tho postal sys
tem. It will bo tried in Washington
at once, and if found practicable extend
ed generally. It affords tho conduct
of one's business with the post oflico
nt home, at least so far as ordinary
transactions aro concerned, nnd it is
expected to largely increase stamp
sales as soon as tho system becomes
general. The house-to-house collec
tion of mail by means of ingeniously
contrived boxes baa already been
adopted, and extonded to 25 freo de
livery cities.

John Scott, a Kansas University Lnw Stu
dent l'robably a Suicide.
La. whence, Kan., Dec. 15. John
Scott, a law student of Kansas uni
versity, wandered from his rooms Sat
urday at midnight, leaving- a noto say
ing that ho wason the verge of insanity.
It is believed that he committed suicide.
During tho last campaign Scott
spoko aud wrote a great deal
for tho Lawronco Bryan club,
and this seemed to bo more thnn
his mind could stand. Search is being
mado in every direction, but so far
without success. Scott had always
been of a melancholy disposition and.
lately had refused to talk to his mother,
repeatedly telling her ho did not want
to talk. Ho was a member of tho
senior law class.

according to a statement published in

gram to President Cleveland in relation

tramp is injured in being put off trains
or ejected from railroad property in
Missouri ho may suo tho railroad com
pany and collect damages, provided ho
is injured by a servant of the compnny,
who is acting- on orders to keep tramps
away. That was tho decision made to
day by tho Kansas City court of appeals
in tho suit of James A. Mcado against
tho Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
railroad.
