INFORMATION ABOUT AGRICUL
TURAL SUBJECTS FROM
RELIABLE SOURCES
In Thayer County, Nobr., tho county
agent wished to show to as many
farmers as possible a Bystem of crop
rotation adapted to their needs. Ho
solectcd tho county fair as an oppor
tunity of meeting perhaps tho largest
number of farmers at any one time.
Securing from the fair board a 7-foot
squaro space in a prominent part of
the fair grounds, ho laid off on' it a
mmaturo farm, with fields in pro
portion to tho 7-foot space. Corn, oats
and wheat were sown in tho fields
In time to be growing nicely when the
fair opened; Imitation trees were
placod to show the location of the
orchard and small models of farm
buildings added. Over 15,000 persons
(visited the tiny farm during tho fair,
studying tho plan, and asking ques
tions about the rotation system.
A largo per cent of tho binder
troubles come from depreciation of
tho machine whilo it Is standing In
the field. Tho knotter mechanism of
tho binder Is a complicated and deli
cate piece of machinery and should
not bo exposed to the weather. A
hoavy coating of rust on these parts
causes most of tho knotter trouble of
tho following years. If tho machine
must bo left in tho field for a time
it is a good policy to cover tho knotter
part wiUi a heavy coating of axlo
groaso and tie an old piece of canvas
over tho binder head. Binder can
vases will not stand any particular
amount of exposure and should bo re
moved as soon as the machine is
stopped. Crickets and mico qulcjdy
destroy tho canvas and in some cases
even cat the jhu One will b. rop'iM
for his time i all the cainases on
tho binder are well wrapped In heavy
buildln paper and suspended on wires
from the rafters in tho granary or
hay loft where they cannot bo molest
ed by insects or mice.
The courthouse lawn In Elbert
County, Colo., like many other lawns,
was badly infested with dandelions.
The county agent suggested killing
them by pasturing, rather than plow
ing under tho sod. According to re
ports rpceived by the United States
Department of Agriculture, tho test
was approved by tho commissioners.
Sufficient hog wlro to fence tho lawn
was purchased and two pastures 100
(eot long and 80 feet wide were made.
A farmer near town furnished six
old owes, which wero placed in one
pasture May 14, when tho dandolions
were at their best. A week later four
. moro were added to tho flock.
Tho owes were changed from one
pasturo to the other at one-week in
tervals. They soon had tho dandelions
and grass eaten down and kept It
clown. Thoy ato blossoms and buda
readily, and the hearts out of tho
dandelion plants close to tho ground.
Bettejv results would have been ob
tained had tho sheep been put in
earlier, but tho experiment proved
qulto effective in ridding tho lawn of
dandelions.

Ford officials stato that every at
