THE NORTH PLATTE SEMI-WEEKLY. TRIBUNE I MARY MARIE EUanor H. Porter Illustrations by H. Livingstone CHAPTER IX Continued . After nil, my recovery wns rapid. I 'was In love with love, you see; not with Mr. Harold Hartshorn. Resides, ,thc next yenr I went to college. And It wns while I wns nt college thnt I met Jerry. . Jerry wns the hrothcr of my college friend, Helen Weston. Helen's elder sister wns n senior ln"thnt same col lege, nnd wns graduated nt the closo of my freshman yenr, The father, mother nnd brother came on to the graduation. And thnt Is where I met Tcrry. If It might, bo culled meeting him. Ho lifted his lint, bowed, said n polite ;nothlng with his lips, nnd an Indiffer ent "Oh, some friend of Helen's," with jhls eyes, nnd turned to u radiant (blonde senior nt my side, i And thnt wns nil for him, But for me ', All thnt dny I watched him when ever opportunity offered ; nnd I suspect thnt I took' care that opportunity of fered frequently. I was fnscluntcd. I hud never seen nny one like him be fore, full, handsome, brilliant, nt per fect ense, he plainly dominated every group of which he was a part. Toward Jerry Was an Artist, It Seemed. him every face was turned yet he .never seenied to know It. (Whntever jhls faults, Jerry Is not conceited. I will give him credit for thnt I) To mo 'he did not speak nguln that day. Jam not sure that ho even looked nt me. ic no (iui mere must still hnyo been In his eyes only the "Oh, some friend of Helen's," thut 1 had seen at the morning Introduction. I did not meet htm again for nearly a year; but thnt did not menn that I dld not hear of htm. I wonder if jllelrn ever noticed how often I used to get her to talk of her home and her family life; nnd how Interested 1 wns In her gnllory of portraits on tho man tel there were two tine ones of her brother there. x Helen wns very fond of her brother. 1 soon found that she loved to talk about lilin ir she hud u good listener. Needless to suy she hnd a very good one In me. Jerry was an artist, It seemed. Ho was twenty-eight years old, and al ready lie hnd won no small distinction. Prices, medals, honorable mention, und a special course abroad all theso Helen told mo nbout. Shu told me, too, about the wonderful success ho had just hnd with tho, portrait of a certain New I'brk society woman. She- said that It was Just going to "mako" Jerry.; that lie could have anything he wanted now anything. I einvjrerry myself during the East er vacation of my second ycur In col Ie.v Helen .Invited mo to go home with her, and Mothor wrote that I might go. Helen hnd been home with me for the Christmas vacation, and Mether and Father liked her very much. Tliero was no hesitation, thore forc, In their consent that I should Tlarlt Helen at Easter time. So I went. Helen lived In New York. Their koine waa a Fifth avenue mansion with nine servants, four automobiles and two- chauffeurs. Naturally such a scale of Hvlns Yia entirely new to mo, and correspondingly fascinating. From tho elaborately uniformed footman that epned the door fortune to the awe French maid who "did" myMl!r, 1 dor4 them all, and moved as 4 dream ot eucban'tmmt Then came Jerry, hosif from a week-end' trip and I for everything else. J- knew from the minute his eye looked nato mine that wjialj'r I bd been before, 1 Wns now cortnlnly no mere "Oh, some friend of Helen's." I wns (so his eyes said) "n dcucedly pretty girl, nnd one well worth cul tlvntlng." Thereupon ho began nt onro to do the "cultivating." Tn less thnn thirty-six hours I wns caught up In the whirlwind of his wooing, nnd would not have escnped It If I could. When I went back to college he held my promlwj that If he could gnln the consent of Father nnd Mother, he might put the engagement ring on my finger. Uncle at college, nlone In my own room, I drew n long brcnth, nnd began to think. It wns the first chnncc I had had. for even Helen now hnd become Jerry by reflection. The more I thought, the more fright ened, dismayed, nnd despairing I be enme. In the clear light of calm, snne reasoning, It was nil so absurd, so Im possible! What could I hnve been thinking of? I must forget Jerry. I pictured him In Andersonvllle, In my own home, I tried to picture him tnlklng to Fnther, to Mother. Absurd, What had Jerry to do with learned treatises on stars, or with the humdrum, everyday life of a stupid, small town? For that matter, what hnd Fnther nnd Mother to do with dancing nnd motoring nnd painting society queens' portraits? Nothing. Plnlnly, even If Jerry, for the sake of tho daughter, liked Fnthcr nnd Mother, Father nnd Mother certainly would not like Jerry. Thnt wns cer tain. Of course I cried myself to sleep that night. Thnt was to be expected. Jerry wns tho world; nnd the world was lost. There was nothing left ex cept, perhaps, n few remnants nnd pieces, scarcely worth the counting excepting, of course, Father and Moth er. Hut ono could not always hnve one's father and mother. There would come n tlmo when Jerry's letter came the next day by special delivery. Ho had gone straight homo from tho station nnd be gun to wrlto to me, (Hoiv like Je.rry that was particularly the special delivery stamp I) The most of his lot ter, nsldo from the usual lover's rhap sodies, hnd to do with plans for the summer what wo would do together at tho Westons' summer cottage In Newport. Ho snld ho should run up to Andersonvllle early very early; Just ns soon ns I wns back from col lege, In fact, so that ho might meet Father nnd Mother, nnd put thnt ring on my flngor. And while I rend the letter, I just knew he would do It. Why, I could even see the spnrkle of the ring on my finger. But In five minutes nfter the letter wns folded nnd put nwny, I knew, with equnl certitude thnt he wouldn't. I hnd been nt home exnetly eight hours when n telegram from Jerry asked permission to come nt once. As gently ns I could I broke the news to Fnther nnu Mother. Ho wns Helen's brother. They must hnve heard mo mention him. I knew him well, very well, Ini.ccd. In fnct, the purpose of this visit wns to nsk them for the hnnd of their daughter. Fnther frowned and scolded, and said, "Tut, tutl" and that I was noth ing but a child. But Mother smiled and shook her hend, even while she sighed, nnd reminded him that I was twenty two whole years older than she wns when she married him ; though In tho same breath she ad mitted thnt I Wns young, nnd she cer tainly hoped I'd be willing to wait be fore I married, even If tho young mnn was all thut they could ask him 'to be. Father wns still a little rebellious, I think, but Mother bless her dear sympathetic heart I soon convinced him thnt they must nt least consent to see this Gerald Weston. So I sent the wire Inviting him to come. Jerry came and he hnd not been five minutes In tho house before' It might easily have seemed thnt 'he hnd nlwnys been there. He did know nbout stars.; at lenst, he tnlked with Fnther nbout them, nnd so ns to hold Father's Interest, too. And he know n lot about Innumerable things In which Mother was Interested. He stayed four days: and nil tho while he was there, I never so touch us thought ot ceremonious dress and dinners, nnd ljverlod but lers nnd footmen; nor did It once oc cur to me that our simple kitchen Nora, nnd Old John's son at tho whool of our ono motorcur, were not beauti fully and entirely adequate, so unus- smilingly and so perfectly did Jerr unmistakably "fit In." (There are other words that so exactly express what I menu.) And In the end, even his chnrm und his triumph wore so un obtrusively complete that I never thought of being surprised at the prompt capitulation of both Father and Mother. Jerry had brought tho ring. Clerry nlwuys brings his "rings" kmd ho never fajls to "put thorn on.") And ho went back to New York with Mother's promlso thnt I should visit them In July at their e&ttago In Now port. They seemed .Hko a dream those four days after ho had gno; and I should- hnvo been, tempted to. doubt the whole thjng hnd there not been the sparkle ol tho ring on my finger, and tho frequont roferenco to Jerry on tho lips ot both Father nnd Mother. They loved Jerry, both of ' them. Fathor said he 'was a fine, manly young fellow; nnd Mothor said he was akdear boy, a Very dear boy,' Nolthor of them spoko much of his painting. Jerry himself, had scarcely mentioned (t jte them, as I remember, after he had gone TO BE CONTINUED. ;o; IBs? iOUrrf ninkar q, Lexlagtoa Visited friends in tho city for a fow days last we6k, To The Voters As n canJIdalo for Uio legislature from Lincoln county I would Hko to lot tho votors know whoro I Btand on n tew of the questions in which I bo llovo they are interested.
