    THE NORTH PLATTE SEMI-WEEKLY TRIBUNE
WANT RETT Bit STREET LIGHTING
Quite a number of residents, Including
sonic who live in the Fourth Wurd, havo sug
gested that the Chamber of Commcrco use its in
fluonco in an offort to secure a better street
lighting system. Whilo candor compels all to
admit that our lighting system is much inferior
to that of the average Nebraska town, yet it is a
problem how, under present conditions, im
provement is possible.
The state law fixes the maximum number
of mills that can bo levied for street lighting
and that maximum has been levied for a num
ber of years past with the result that the
funds obtained have only been sufficient
to maintain the system as it now exists. The
question therefore arises in what manner can
funds bo obtained to pay for the increased elec
tric current which an improved lighting system
would demand?
In many Nebraska instances the reason why
towns have well lighted streets is because the
Street lights are supplied from a municipally
owned plant and the cost of operation is not re
stricted to a certain levy of taxes.
It is probable that some day the people of
North Platte will decide to combine a power
plant for street lighting with the water plant
STREET PAVING
People generally are bemoaning business
and labor conditions, and are wondering when
a more visible upward trend will come, and yet
as an individual or as a community, how can we
expect Improved conditions If wo do not assist
in bringing about the desired end? Certainly we
must do our part, for it would be selfish and un
fair for North Platte to hang back and depend
upon other communities to do those things
which will bring about better conditions.. Tak
ing thiB as the proper view, North Platte can
certainly be, and will bo, commended for pro
ceeding with its paving improvements, thus giv
ing employment in its construction, and to some
extent increasing demand for labor at the plants
where the'necessary material is manufactured.
If every town or city will spend as much pro
portionally in a public improvement way within
the next three or four months as will North
Platte, the ranks of the unemployed will bo won
derfully reduced and business conditions won
derfully, improved.
North Platte has taken the right step.
IMPROVING WELLEIjEET ROAR
During the past ten days a gang of men and
nmi then we can have a brilliantly lighted city.; teams have been working on tho Thoelecke hill
Until such a time, however, wo cannot hope tor
much of an improvement in our ktroet lighting
system.
INCREASE IN SCHOOL TAXES
In 1908 there were 1,1(56 children of school
ago in tho North Platte school district and tho
total tax levied that year for their education was
$19,451, or an average of $16.68 per pupil. In
1921 wo taxed ourselves $154,036 for educating
the 2,553 children of school ago, or Yin avorago
of $63-35 per child; During those fourteen years
the yearly cost of conducting tho schools has
increased nearly 800 per cent, the school popula
tion has increased 110 per cent and the cost per
pupil nearly 400 per cent.
FINANCES
Subscriptions to the Chamber of Com
nlerco 1922 Budget up to March 1st totaled $6,
253, with several business men yet to respond
with subscriptions that may run the total to $6,
500, or $1,000 less than last year- Expenditures
for February wore $491.29 including $160 turned
over to tho South Side Survey Association. Bank
balance has dropped to less than $300, but sub
scriptions totaling $1,500 are duo April 1st. nnd
it is hoped that these win do paiu promptly.
on tho Wollfleot road, and as now proposed by
the county commissioners we will have a new
route to Wellfleet boforo next fall. It is the in
tention of tho commissioners to abandon the
present trail through the sandhills and lay out
practically a new route the greater part of the
way between the Montague ranch and Wellfleet.
Tho McCook and Maywood people insist that the
proposed state aid road between Oberlin, Kan.,
and North Platte, shall not be routed via Well-
fleet and upon this proposition there has been a
"locking of horns." The commissioners feel, and
rightly bo, that Wellfleet is a Lincoln county
town and is entitled to more consideration than
villages outside the county.
HIDS FOR ICE HOUSES
At least two bids for the group of big ice
houses owned by the Union Pacific company
wero filed by local parties. One of these bid
ders made an offer with the purpose of dispos
Ing of tho lumber to farmers and others; the
other party would like to use at least several of
the buildings for storage purpooses if consent
to allow tho buildings to stand can be secured.
It is understood, however, that on account of the
fire hazard the company wants the buildings
torn down.
