Twenty-two tired volunteer fire
men' came in on nn early train this
morning after sending tho week at
Norfolk attending tho Rtato conven
tion. They wore tired hut happy. For
moro than a year they have desired
to ho host to tho state hody and at
tho meeting yesterday afternoon tho
convention hy a hig majority on tho
second hallot accepted tho invitation
cxtonded hy George Wilkin's. The
convention was a success although
the weather was had. Almost a
thousand firemen were thero nnd
over 850 of thom attended a banquet
last night. O. 0. Dedmore was tho"
Chamber of 'Commorco delegate who
accompanied tho local firemen and
assisted in getting tho convention for
North Platte. Tho hoys report tho
treatment at tho Norfolk hotels and
restaurants as fine. They say there
were ten' pullmnn sleepers on tho
trades all of tho timo and they wero
fUled with delegates thus relieving
tho crowded hotels at night. Colum
bus and Sidney wero also after tho"
convention. "Wo have wanted, a fire
men's convention for a long, time,"
said J. It. Basklns, when seen this
morning, "and we are going right to
work tb making plans for tho big
event which will keep us busy and
working hard until it has been pulled
off."

tho Saturday before and that was a
record. Tho loans wero' made to in
divlduals, not schools. Miss Murpliy,
tho librarian, says tho circulation of
non-fiction books has doubled during
tho past week. She thinks this Is ac
counted for by the opening of tho
night school and so she obtained ad
ditional books from the state library
for this, special use.

A movement was started about tho
town this week to have a class in
show card writing started at night
school. Several planned to attend
tho class but It was discovered that
registration of now pupils had beon
closed. Then it was planned to start
tho class and get enough students to
transfer from other classes to this
class. Nothing final had beon done
when wo heard last.
A number df now books have been
aq'qulrod by tho City Library and
placed in tho Juvenllo department.
This waB rendered necessary because
of tho largo number of children bor
rowers who patronized thlB branch
of tho library. Tho now books aro
animal and naturo stories, stories
about people and stories of travel and
history. Theso also tend to supple
ment tho regular work of tho boys
and girls in their school, classes.

city for a placo to got in out of tho
weather. When refused a place there
they are thrown on tholr own re
sources and resort to hold-up or bur
glary to secure what thoy need, ,Whon
tho detention room Is equipped, tho
polico can put them in thoro whoro
they can go to bed and when tho door
