up by Private Thomns O. Jones, nn
American. After, taking his buddy to
salety, Jones disappeared. Back in
tho lines ngnln, Hnley was captured by
the Germans nnd lost nil trace of his
rescuer.
On May 20. 1021, Hnley nrrlvcd nt
tho home of his sweetheart In Canada,
nis wedding wns to occur at 8 o'clock
and the guests were assembled.
Then Private Jones reappeared. He
had deserted tho army at Fort Slocum,
N. Y., because, lie snld, they were going
to send him bnck to Germnny. Ho wns
suffering from mustard gris burns nnd
had a wife nnd two children dependent
upon him.
nalcy acted quickly. Telling Jones
to return to his wife and keep quiet,
ho Informed his fiancee of his Intention,
She declined to wait while he served
the term Jones would hnve to spend
In prison. At tho hour of the wedding
Haley took a train for St. Paul, Minn.
He gave himself to the first police
officer he encountered, declaring ho
was Private Thomas G. Jones, wnnted
for desertion.
Tried by court-martial at Fort Crook,
Neb., naley was sentenced to dis
honorable discharge and sir months In
prison, no hnd served all but 18 dnys
of his sentence when authorities, by
checking fingerprints nnd identifica
tion learned of the substitution. The
Legion is petitioning President Hnrdlng
to purge the dishonorable discharge
from Haley's record.
