RE
To bo successful with begonias
through their blooming soason, much
doponds on how you havo cared for
thom during the summer. Many peo
plo prefer to keep old plants ovet
from year to year, but this Is reallv
a poor plan, becauso after a begonia
Is ono year old It invariably bo
comes straggling and shapeless. So
It Is very much better to ralso young
plants oach year. During tho hot
weather they require a light, sandy
soil nnd should bo shaded In such a
mannor that they get all the sun pos
sible, but aro not scalded and burned.
Whon the time comes to pot them,
it will bo necessary to put plenty of
broken crockery ln the bottom of the
pot boforo tho soil goes ln. You will
find that thoy will bloom bettor In
small-sized pots, where thoy will
mako strong roots. After you have
potted tho plants do not allow them
to stand on tho ground If you fall
to take this precaution tho pots will
bocomo lnfestod with earth worms,
which will keep tho ,soll from drain
ing properly so that it will soon bo
como sour. A Bour soil is not con
ductlvo to strong, vigorous root
growth.
Whon tho fall comes and you must
tako In tho plants, placo thom In south
windows nnd give thom plenty of air,
I can hear some readers say, 'Oh,
dear! I havent nny south windows.'
Woll, ln that case, uso tho sunniest
onos you havo for your begonias. You
will find thoy will thrfvo best In n
warm atmosphere, and will oven
stand furnace air hotter than almost
nny othor plants. That Is ono reason
thoy can bo rccommendod for house
plants. If you notico that thoy aro
dropping tholr flower buds, and that
tholr leaves begin to turn yollow, you
may bo satisfied you havo thom ln
too cool an atmosphere.
Bogonlas aro not so tractable
under tho clippers as somo plants
nro So If you Intond to keep thom
dwarfed and bushy, you must start to
pinch them whon they aro tiny, spe
cimens. Just tako out tho merest tip
of each Bhoot. If you cut a strong
shoot half way back, tho shoot 13
very apt to romain a coarso stub the
entire winter.
It is very beneficial to set tho
plants ln tho bathtub occassionallyind
sprinkle them well. This seems to
kcop them clean nnd fresh looking
and thoy grow and flower bettor.
I have found that almost all failure
of wintor flowering begonias aro duo
to ovor potting or trying to mako old
plants do what thoy aro past doing.
So it Is better to grow young plants
ovory year from cuttings. They will
root readily ln a window In a pot ot
sand, If caro is taken that thoy aro
novor too wet. This matter of not
ovor watering Is most Important.
When you mako tho Blips or cuttings,
uso no hard wood, but only tho tips
of tho young slioots. Make thom
nbout threo Inches ln length. After
rooting, pot thom In small pots In
sandy soil and boo that they havo
plenty or drainage. It is safer to
havo too much than too llttlo.
In examining tho listed variotlo3,
many roadors will no doubt bo dis
appointed to find I havo mentioned
only Blx varieties, tho majority of
which thoy probably have. Theso aro
not now or romarkablo In nny may
but thoy aro vigorous varlotios.
I might havo mentioned tho Glorle
do Lorraine. It leads In all flower
shows but, hko many unusual flow
ers, it is utterly Impractical for tho
avorago homo window. Such begonias
como to us from tho Islands of tho
wostom coast of Africa. Thoro thoy
bloom ln tho summer nnd rest In the
wintor; hero wo mako them bloom
with thq artlttclal heat Troiii the
stoves ln tho wintor. Atter tho winter
blooming thoy should rest during the
summer, but our warm climate will
not permit this. So thoy blossom on,
and at tho end of twolvo months be-
como exhausted and dlo.
Thoroforo, whllo tho raro begonias
aro boautlful, wa must cling to tho
onos that wo know will livo ln tho en
vlronmonts wo havo to offor. Tho Al
