In this country during the last war
and who was subject to the draft,
who claimed exemption because he
was a foreigner, can never become a
citizen of this country. In ono way
that seems to bo fair. If ho could
not go to war whon tho country
needed him he should not be allowed
to securo her protection in times of
peace, in mat way it scorns lair.
But in another way It was hard on
the people because that provision of
the law was not known and under
stood. In tho case in question, two
men had formed a partnership in
business and were starting out in
fine Bhapc. They had a stock ot .

The first known whlto men to visit
the territory now known as Lincoln
County were six French explorers
under tho leadership of Plerro and
Paul Mallet. This was in Juno 1739,
nearly 200 years ago. Thoy probably
camo up tho rlvor from New Orleans
and We know thoy spent the winter of
17U8-0 In tho vicinity of tho mouth or
tho Nlobararn River In tho northeast
corner of the state. In the spring of
1730 the 'party started overland for
tho French settlement at Santa Fe,
Now Mexico. Tho roport of this trip
was sent to tho French authorities at
Nev Orleans i and forms part of tho
well-known Margry papers- From the
winter camp they traveled south to
the Pl.vtto which thoy named and the A
'followed tho north bank of tho Platto
west to tho forks -whoro thoy crossed
tlu- rl'er with their pack horses and
camped on tho 14th day of Juno on
the I'ont.h bank of the river near tho
hills which wuro there. This may
lmv bo n near whoro the Experiment
Station Is now located. During the
next tbii-o days they traveled south
across tho high plains whoro thoy
suffered lor wood and water. After
many days travol they reached Santa
Fo en Julv 22. Theso two brothers
with their four companions wore tho
first whlto men to stand on tho hills
and look ovor tho Platto Valley, prob-
bly as tar as the site of tho present
itv of North Platte. Thoy talked
French and had French clothes and
arms. Thoy wcro also tho first to
tnvnl nvor tho sand hills and farm
lands of tho south part of tho county,
The only results of their exploration
Wiih the naming of the Platto river
and directing attention of traders and
trappers to this part ot tho new
world. Tho nnmo Mallet does not ap-
ipcar In an part ot tho state as a
to bring your friends to dine. A
place where tho greatest care Is ex
excised in the selection of the food
materials. A place where tho cuisine
Is exquisite, where tho china and cut
lory is tasteful, and the surroundings
pleasant. This is such a place. Come
and enjoy It.
