ASK A POLICEMAN
By RUTH BIRDSALL.
(, 1921, by JlcClure Newapaper Syndicate.)
She was tiny and timid, a slip of a
clrl, with the freshness of country
daisies and jrcen Holds about her. For
many minute she had been standing
by the big revolving doors of Beacon's
department store, searching every face
us the crowds surged la and out.
Choking back the persistent sobs
and fears, iho realized that she must
think and think hart).
She had heard that In all big cities
there were men whose duty It was to
direct strangers and to help them, and
she had always been warned to bo
very careful nbout speaking to people
promiscuously.
"Always ask u policeman" -that was
It. "Always ask a policeman," mother
had said, and Aunt Carrlo had said,
and Cousin Luclna had said' "Always
ask a policeman."
Through the thinning crowd she sift
ed, glancing timidly nbout, until she
spleil u big, glowltig-faced policeman
at the cross streets. Up to him she
rushed, heedless of trafllc or trafllc
regulations.
"Oh, sir," she cried. "Jim's gone, and
I'm lost! Pleaso tell mo what to doV'
, "You're lost, are you?" smiled tho
policeman. "Well, who Is Jim, nnd
where do you live'"
Autos honked, drivers shouted nnd
pedestrians scowled and scolded while
OHlcor Dane listened to the half-sobbed
story of tho llttlo country Daisy.
"Jim is James Dee from CTilcago,
and I've run away from home to mar
ry him, and now I can't find lifm. 7jn
so afraid something has happened to
him. Please "find him for jbp."
Officer Dane signalled for tho impaJ
tlc'nt (Iflrn'edestrlans'to cross.
Fujfuing nnd seetRfhg, They swept past
the stalwart man and tho frightened
girl. The spot upon which they stood
was like a tiny Island in a tempestu
CM sea of traffic, . -.,
"Walt n minute," encouraged Dane,
"and I'll help you."
Soon the home-bound rush hour was
over, and Dane piloted his charge to a
sheltered corner.
"So Jim Is lost, is he? And you aro
going to marry him, are you? Just
play I'm your granddad and tell me all
about It," nnd his kindly blue eyes In
vited confidence.
Hesitatingly Daisy explained that
Jim had como to her home in Danbury
Hill for his summer vacation a month
before when her mother had adver
tised for a few boarders to help fiU the
family pocketbook. Jim was wonderful-
the finest man In tho world. He
loved her but mother didn't trust him
and wanted to know hlnr better boforo
giving her consent. Finally, Jim's va
cation being over, ho had found It Im
possible to leavo Daisy, and she
couldn't let him go without her; so
they had eloped, and now ho was lost
nnd sho was lost and she was very
unhappy.
I!Ig BUI Dune pondered it moment.
"Do you love this Dee fellow well
enou&h, little Indy, to go bnck home
tonight and 'face the music alone,,
whlli' I hunt for him?"
"Oh. If I only could go home," sho
sobbed. "I'd never run away again."
Gently Officer Dane led Daisy,
somewhat crumpled nnd crnshed,
through the now quieter streets to tho
railroad station where, promising her
news fn the morning, he placed her on
the train for Danbury Hill.
The next noon a trim, big-shouldered,
blue-eyed man swung off the
trnln at Ihinbury Hill station. Daisy,
from the hill-top, watched him climb
the hill nnd come straight up to her
door.
"Good morning, little lady," ho sang
out to her. "How's your heart this
morning? All battered and torn or
can it stand a llttlo shaking up?"
"Why, It's my pollcemnn," gasped
Daisy, "only you aren't n policeman
nt nil."
"Oh, yes; 1 am a policeman, all
right," chuckled Dane; "but it's my
day oft and I camo to deliver my mes
sngo In person. It's not I who am mas
querading, but James Deo of Chicago,
U. S. A."
"Mnsquerudlng?"
"Sure,"; and genlnl BUI Dane settled
himself on tho stone wnll that skirted
tho farm, Ho mopped his cheerful face
and beamed a smile of understanding
that warmed Daisy's heart.
"I thought I was right yesterday,"
he said, "but levanted to bo sure bo
foro I took a chance of breaking your
llttlo heart. Your friend Jim nover
saw Chicago. Ho's a soda clerk. In a
drug store. Many a lemon and lime
ho's'i mixed for me, and I dropped In
for ono, this morning, no was Just
back from a month's vacation, nerc's
a noto ho sent you, by tho wny."
Trembling Daisy opened tho -noto,
whllo Done strolled away, his heart
singing as It had nover sung before.
,"Denr Daisy" tho noto read. "I'm
a cad. I'm not a rich guy from Chica
go at all, so I quit you cold yester
day. You'ro too good a girl to Jolly.
Mil Dano ferreted mo out. He's soino,
detcctlvo and tho squarest mn'n I know.
Forglvo and forget. Jim."
t
The afternoon trnln was leaving
Danbury Hill station for tho city ns a
broad-shouldered, man with glad blue
eyes Jumped gaily on the rear plat
form. "Good-by. llttlo lady," ho shouted.
"I'll be buck fqr my vocation nnd,
say, that family ndvlce of yours Is all
rrsht 'AlwayH ask a policeman. Don't
forgot to follow It."
