molsturo. Howovor probably the
most accurate measure of tho relative
amount of molsturo available at tho
present tlmo for tho crop is a measure
of tho molsturo now stored in tho soli.
The soil molsturo data secured by L
Lu Zook anjl his predecessors at the
Exporlmont Station buows that on or
about May 1-, of tho last nine years,
the percentage of molsturo to the first
bIx feet of tho soil was as follows:
Ave 1921 b'l'w b'l'w
avo. 1920
Following whcat12.1 9.5 2.9 5.4
Following corn-14.G 13.6 .8 4.b
Summer tilled ..17.3 11.9 1.47 3.3S
Pralrlo sod 14.0 11.9 1.4 515
For practical purposes wo may con
sider thcBo percentages as inches of
wator, and that on May 1, 1921 tho
soil contained from .8 Inch to 2.9 Inch
es less of water than during the) ay-
uerago of tho last nine years, and from
3.38 to 5.5 Inches less water than at
tho samo tlmo In 1920. This Indicates
tho reason for the farmer saying he
would Hko' to soo ' "Some real , rains
that would sOak in." While crops
arc in good condition, and tho outlook
Is all rhht, yot tho farmor would feel
moro aasuranco of raising a good
crop If tho reservoir was full Instead
of containing loss than tho avorago
amount of water.
An Inch of wator safoly storcjl'In
tho soil Is worth much moro than an
Inch of rainfall, as tho runoff during
a haavy Bhower may amount to 75
per cent.
