OFFICIAL TESTS TO HE 3IADE OF
SUBSTATION DAIltY COWS.
, Tho Experimental Substation has
put Into oporatlon a plan for develop
lnir more carofully tho production of
tho purebred Holstein-Fi-elsIan cows
by carrying each of them through at
least a seven day official test, and a
305 day semi-official test. This has
mado it necessary to employ another
man In tho dairy, and will bring a
special man to tho farm at least two
days every month and practically full
time somo months. In the seven dny
test the cows aro milked and fed four
times dally, a six hour Intervals. The
tester must be In thostail at each tlnio
of milking, see "that all rules aro
followed, and weigh and test tho milk.
If a high record is being mado more
than ono tester is required. Every
pecautlon is taken to guard against
fraud or Inaccuracy. In tho semi
official test, cows may bo milked .
many ns four time1? c'nfly. This is tlio
practice in somo of the best herds. Oiv
jtjhei Experimental Substation Farm
1 the cows aro' milked three times dally
at eight hour intervals. The tester Is
required to bo present two days each
month.
This plan with the purchase of tho
Junior Herd Sjro does not contemplate
an increase "in tho slzo of the herd,
rather the opposite, but gives assur
ance of tho development of a Holsteln
Friesian Herd at least tho equal of
any in Nebraska, and should bo tho
means of" giving tho dairymen, who
are ready for good cattle, access to
the best blood obtainable.
