EWitor of tho Tribune,
Dear Sir:
I am what might bo called a' tran
sient, as I only niakc North Platto
my homo when 1 visit herd. However
a.I.go about your beautiful city and ag
1 )pok at your" many beautiful homes,
I'o'ften ask myself If these arc really
homes. And 1 wonder Jf tho parents
iri these homes give much earnest
thought to tho greatest asset In these
homes tho boys and girls.
"f!l am lead to boltevc thoro. Is plenty
at money in North Platto to invest In
any real enterprise that will bring good
returns In dollars and conts to tho
lnydBtbrs. i wonder if an investment
In' real lifo for tho boys and girls
would- arouse tho samo Interest. I
Bold I am a transient, but aro wo not
all tronolonta for that matter? And
la tills connection tUcro comes fo my
mind tho work of a Very dear friend
tJho nfor her com'orslon fifty-seven
years ago felt called upon to dovoto
b'orllfo to helping savo those girls who
jitullcft homo and gono astray, Sho
wimt to tho city nd often at midnight
without tho aid of a policeman sho
wjrald go to tho slums nd try and
fescuo tho lost ones for whom Christ
gavb his life. Sho was successful In
rescuing many and those she took to
tho homo of which sho wus matron.
Finally horown health broke down and
slid wont to her home. When sho died
her last words woro these "I wish all
my friends could soo how thin the
veil Is between tho two worlds."
I wish to God there wcro men and
womon In tho churches of North Platto
who would got tho vision of the ncedrf
of tho young pcoplo of this city. There
aro somo who could set in motion the
machinery which would holrj. dovelop
tho highest Ideals In our yoong men
and womon. I have heard "several
young men express their longing for
a Y. M. C, A. In North Platto and this
olppoalod to me in a very pathetic
way. I hope and pray that sufficient
Interest inny be aroused in the moral
and religious elcmont of this beautiful
city so that tltoy Will tako those steps
In this matter which will promote in
terest In tho vory best things in moral
and christian citizenship And I want
theso things to bo done ore moro par
ents and citizens realize tho bitter
meaning of those words "It might
have been."

MOUNTAIN GOAT WAS READY
And Eagle Knew Better Than to Force
the Issue With Such an
Adversary.
"The writer once witnessed a fight
between a golden caglo nnd n full
crown mountain goat This fight took
place on a high divide In the Bull
.rlvcr country In British Columbia,"
snys Charles S. Smith in an nrtlclo In
Boys' Life,, entitled "The Rocky Moun
tain Sheep at norac."
"I was stalking the goat at the time
for the purposcsof taking somo photo
graphs as close up as I could get, and
was working my way cautiously from
rock to rock, keeping concealed from
tho goat, who was feeding on n Httlo
flat space on the top of the mountain.
As I peered around the projecting
point of n crag I saw tho goat sudden
ly wheel and look toward a small point
sticking up oh top ot the rldgo and
there, comlngovfr the top of the
point was a very ldrgc golden eagle,
flying just above tho surface of tho
ground and coming directly at tho
goat Tho goatBtoodwIth head low
ered and when tho eagle Came within
about ten feet of him, It suddenly
swooped Into th air' about fifteen or
twenty feet high, turned completely
over nnd dropped like a plummet at
the goat. I wondered what the goat
would do, but evidently ho had It all
figured out, for as the eagle descended
he reared on his hind feet, stood
straight up and slashed his head from
sldo to side, his horns describing n
circle In he air, their sharp points up
ward; the old eagle evidently knew
fetter than to try to drop on n thing
of that sort or to try to seizo It, so
he caught himself In his swift descent
and volplaned over the side of the
ridge j hero over n deep, dnrk canyon
ho circled several times, the goat
standing watching until he disappeared
over tho shoulder of the mountain."
